Yea no joke. Also, doesn't the PS3 have the PS2 chips inside? So why is it doing any resize? Also, WTF is it doing to the colors? That split screen not only showing the jaggies shows a really huge color difference. The original seems warmer and more "life like" while the PS3 seems really washed out. And I heard complaints about the PS3 games seeming washed out when compared to 360 games. WTF was Sony doing during development?

It's not doing any resize because it's got a PS2 inside essentially. It's almost a purely hardware solution, as opposed to the software emulation on the 360, so you're seeing the PS2 hardware inside the PS3 throwing its output straight to the display output of the PS3 with no stops along the way to do smoothing or anything. There's probably some difference in how that display output was expected to work on the PS2 so you end up with some weird artifacts on some games.

It sounds like incompetence in management. The entire PS3 says "not well thought out" to me. They could have used more people saying "Is that important?" or "What about this?" or "This should be focussed on". If you've ever worked at a large company, management is absolutely key, and it's easy to tell when a company does not have good communication within itself.

It's blind fanboyism going either way. It's pretty unfortunate, but it's getting worse. It's much like partisan politics. You're going to argue to your best ability for one side or the other, but in order to counter-act it, the other side resorts to the same tactics.
So rather than getting neutral, objective information, you get biased, exaggerated information from both sides that you have to try and work together into something realistic.-
In this case I don't think it is blind fanboyism. Can you imagine the shit that the XBox 360 would have gotten if their backwards compatability was this broken? Instead it upconverts old XBox games (Ninja Gaiden looks even better on the 360 than it did on my old XBox).
Bottom line is that backwards compatability on the PS3 is fundamentally broken. Period. No partisan hackery here, it's right there plain as day. It will remain that way until they can fix this in a firmware update.-
I'm tired of this silly upscaling thing though.
I read somewhere that it's another one of MS's mandatory initiative things to upsample all old Xbox 1 games.
That's very nice of them but half the fucking games don't work and some of the ones that did, have FPS issues.
Fuck that noise, I'd just want my games to WORK - period, PS3 or X360.
It's unreasonable to have them look worse than on the Xbox or PS2 but it's "greedy" to expect more - I just want the SAME quality but all the games :/

Improved image quality through backwards compatability is gravy for me. I'd be perfectly happy if it looked exactly the same, like PS1 games on the PS2 or everything on the Wii. Higher res and added AA to take the curse off the introduced jaggies on the 360, again, is fine by me. Most games not on the list at this point aren't worth porting over (Psychonauts is on the way), and the only framerate issue I ever noticed was the initial BC version of Ninja Gaiden, which was fixed later.

How much filtering is being applied to that image?
Here's something else for you
Most Xbox 360 games render at 1280x720 then output @ whatever thanks to the scaler chip.
How do you know Prince isn't being rendered @ 1280x720 then downscaled by the hardware scaler chip? (seriously now?)
They shouldn't be aproving games with FPS issues in the first place :( -

You're honestly finding fault with actual PS3 owners complaining that a major piece of functionality with the system not only fails to do what was originally promised, but in fact makes it significantly worse?
I can't stand mindless bashing, but this is a real issue that's a huge drawback for those of us who want to continue playing our PS2 (or PS1) games.
I was hoping that with this generation I could just pack up my PS2, Xbox, and GameCube. So far I've still had to keep my PS2 and Xbox hooked up. It's not the end of the world but I just don't have the room or inputs for this stuff at all, and Sony specifically promised functionality that the PS3 does not achieve.-
Great point.
I was mildly interested in a PS3, partly because my PS2 died around the same time that DQ8 came out (we barely finished it). After reading up on this unfortunate issue, I ended up buying a used PS2 recently, which I honestly hated to do.
Maybe I'll think about buying a PS3 in a year. Maybe not.

BC wont be an issue in the future when the newer PS3 games come out. Just dont sell your PS2s yet. You wont get that much for it anyway so it doesnt make sense. -

That's odd. I mean I'm not arguing with ya, certainly not going to disagree considering you are experiencing the same thing, but I've seen people play a few ps2 games on their PS3 and it didnt look anything like that, it looked fine.
Obviously there wasnt any enhancement to the existing graphics, but they looked just as they did on the PS2, that's why I figured it was the guys TV or the cables or something.
