Expert Splatoon players finally have something new to sink their teeth into today. That's because Nintendo has announced that it will be dropping Splatoon 2's big 3.0 update on Tuesday night.

The 3.0 update was first revealed during the March 8 Nintendo Direct, pointing to the debut of the X Rank. This ranking is for the absolute best of the best, so annyone who's sitting at rank S+10 will automatically get bumped to X Rank after the new update. The 500 highest X Rank players for each of Splatoon 2's four Ranked Battle modes will be revealed on the SplatNet 2 app. Rankings will be reset at the end of every month, with lower tier X Rank players falling to rank S+9.

That's all well and good, but what about the other common folk who aren't good enough to reach X Rank? Tonight's update will also include over 100 pieces of gear, both all-new and returning from the original Splatoon.

There are also some noteworthy balance tweaks. More information on that can be found on the Nintendo Support site. The 3.0 update for Splatoon 2 is set to arrive tonight at 6PM PT.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
