How to Get and Farm Exotic Engrams in Destiny 2

Published , by Sam Chandler

Exotic engrams are the pièce de résistance of engrams in Destiny 2, offering players the most powerful weapons at the highest possible Power level. Players looking to fast track their leveling, or even just unlock some missing weapons and armor, will want to know how to get Exotic engrams, and maybe even how to farm for them.

How to get and farm Exotic Engrams

The best way to earn Exotic engrams in Destiny 2 is to participate in high level activities. Each major content release, and the subsequent seasons, adds more activities that reward high-level gear. The more of these activities you complete, the more chances of receiving an Exotic drop. The release of Shadowkeep saw Nightfalls be rebranded as The Ordeal: Nightfall. This is one of the best places to farm for Exotics, though they won't drop as engrams. The harder the difficulty, the more likely the reward will be an Exotic.

Prime Engrams are a great way to gain more Power but they may also drop Exotic gear.

The new activities are now known as Challenges and are the main source of Powerful Engrams in the game. Outside of the weekly and daily challenges, players should also tackle the Leviathan raid, being sure to spend some time unlocking the Underbelly to loot all available chests. The reason for this is that one chest is guaranteed to drop an Exotic.

Beyond these activities, players need to be aware of the new type of engram, the Prime Engram, as getting these is a guaranteed bump in Power, though they also might drop an Exotic for those lucky gamers. The main tasks players should focus on for Exotic engrams are:

If players are able to, they should absolutely attempt the Prestige version of the raids, as they are an excellent source of gear and it’s the only way to get the Sleeper Simulant catalyst. Alternatively, try to complete Hawthorne's raid bounties, as these are unique challenges that reward powerful gear.

This big Vex boy is guaranteed to drop an Exotic engram. This is useful for players stuck on the Sturm Hand Cannon Exotic quest.

Another way to get, specifically, an Exotic engram is to start the quest to unlock Divinity. This quest starts off by having players kill a massive Vex, which is guaranteed to drop an Exotic engram. This is useful for those players that are trying to unlock Sturm and Drang, the Exotic Hand Cannon and Sidearm combo.
