Note in 2008 when Russia attacked and occupied a part of Georgia, they went on a recruiting drive to find retired pilots who had experience flying in the mountainous terrain of Georgia.

During that campaign the Georgians managed to shoot down some Russian jets but Russia lost more to accidents and friendly fire (both ways with their air defense shooting down returning jets thinking they were Georgian counter-attack and Russian jets bombing their own ground forces since they all look the same except their vehicles were pointed towards Georgia).

Even Georgian special forces managed to get close enough to almost stab the head of the Russian ground forces in a melee that involved knives. Russia ultimately prevailed but they were facing a much smaller country (where most of their trained forces were deployed to Iraq to assist the US mission) and a shorter time frame (5 days) and more limited objectives. But the follies that happened became limited but were a preview of what would go down in Ukraine over a decade later.
