Nintendo rejected Skylanders exclusivity

Before the Skylanders series became a sales juggernaut for Activision, the publisher was looking into a partner. Given the kid-friendly nature of the game, they initially went to Nintendo, which could have made the toy-game hybrid a Nintendo-exclusive. Of course, that didn't work out.

Princess Peach-themed pink Wii Remotes coming this month

Nintendo has announced yet another color variant for the Wii Remote Plus controller. Coming later this month is a pink controller, designed after Princess Peach. You'll notice that it includes a crown design over the speaker and blue buttons "that echo Peach's royal jewelry." In addition, a yellow D-Pad "evokes her regal crown."

Nintendo explains why Animal Crossing is not a fit for smartphones

Nintendo has been somewhat imprecise in detailing its mobile plans, recently acknowledging the need to develop on smartphones but hesitant to move its top-tier franchises. That philosophy is ingrained throughout the company, as Animal Crossing producer Katsuya Eguchi says he believes the franchise is best on portable devices, but that it's too detailed to put on smartphones.

Animal Crossing on Wii too formulaic, says Nintendo

In a talk at the Game Developers Conference, Animal Crossing: New Leaf project lead Aya Kyogoku admitted that Nintendo played it too safe when it made the Wii game, Animal Crossing: City Folk. Following the success of Wild World on DS, he says, the company stuck to the formula too much.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 game coming to Wii, Wii U, PS3, Xbox 360

DreamWorks Animation's upcoming How to Train Your Dragon 2 will be getting a console game adaptation from Torus Games, a veteran developer of licensed games. The upcoming game will let players ride dragons, compete in mini-games, and participate in tournaments. It'll be available this June on Xbox 360, Nintendo 3DS, Wii, Wii U, and PlayStation 3.

Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service on Wii and DS ending on May 20

Nintendo will end its Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service for Wii and Nintendo DS owners on May 20, according to a post on Nintendo's website. This means Wii and DS owners will no longer be able to use online play, matchmaking, or leaderboards across any of the two platforms' titles.

EA Sports ends the FIFA Manager series

EA Sports has announced that FIFA Manager 14 will be the final installment in the long-running soccer simulation series. FIFA Manager had been an annual franchise since 2002, but lead designer Gerald Köhler notes that continuing the series would ultimately prove technologically too demanding. He also indirectly ceded to the European dominance of Sega's Football Manager series.

Even without the PlayStation 4 launch, next week would bring a solid lineup of new releases, including the XCOM: Enemy Within expansion, space sim X Rebirth, the revamped Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition, Injustice: Gods Among Us for PC, Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus, sci-fi social network sim Redshirt, and Chivalry: Deadliest Warrior. With the PS4 arriving too, oh me oh my it's a big week.

$100 Wii Mini launching in US this month

How curious it was that Nintendo originally only released the Wii Mini in Canada, last December. The shrunken, stripped-down console later launched across Europe in early 2013, but still not the US--or even Japan. Apparently now is the time, though, as Nintendo today announced the Wii Mini will arrive in US stores "by the middle of November" at $99.99.

New game releases of November 4-10

Next week brings the first next-gen game, with the release of what one imagines will surely be the second-best-selling game of the year, Call of Duty: Ghosts. For whatever reason, the PS4 version is imminent, even if you can't play for some time.

We're also getting Wii Sports Club, Tale of Tales' sensual Luxuria Superbia, Sid Meier's Ace Patrol: Pacific Skies, the proper PC launch of State of Decay, and the very last game from Arkedo, Poof VS the Cursed Kitty.
