VGA 2011 'potential acceptance speeches' from Drake, Wheatley revealed

VGA 2011 'potential acceptance speeches' from Drake, Wheatley revealed

Oh, you thought that the industry had finally escaped the grasp of the Spike TV Video Game Awards? Not quite. Here are a few of the "acceptance speeches" that couldn't make it into the program--not because Spike TV decided to ignore most of the winners, but because these digitally rendered characters didn't win.

The Joker won the award for "Best Character," but here are the potential speeches you would've heard had Portal 2's Wheatley or Uncharted 3's Nathan Drake had won.

2011 Spike VGA winners recap

Between the trailer premiers, backstage carnival games, and, yes, tea-bagging it was easy to miss the actual Video Game Award winners during the telecast.

With the help of a couple pauses on the recorder, I put together this quick recap of all the winners, many of which only received a brief mention. Of course the show culminated in the Game of the Year award, which the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim took home. For all the rest, check out the list after the jump.

Batman: Arkham World teased

Shock! There's going to be another Batman: Arkham game. Titled Batman: Arkham World, the game was teased during the Spike TV Video Game Awards during the "acceptance speech" for Joker, who won the Best Character award from the show.

While accepting the award, the CG animated Joker held up a script for "Batman: Arkham World," saying "whoops, spoilers."

There's few surprises in the Spike TV Video Game Awards trailer for BioShock Infinite. However, there is a lot of gameplay footage set to some soothing tunes. See Irrational Games' unique mix of FPS action and American history in the latest trailer, after the break.

Diablo 3 'opening cinematic' revealed

Diablo 3 'opening cinematic' revealed

After accepting an award for the studio, Blizzard took to the stage with an award for all: the opening cinematic for Diablo III. In typical Blizzard fashion, the opening for its next game--and our next obsession--was gorgeous. Watch as fire rains upon the land and pits to hell burst open. Then spend some time with your loved ones because they may not see much of you when the game finally launches in 2012.

Fortnite is Epic Games' new title

Fortnite is Epic Games' new title

Epic Games said their next game would be "fresh" and very different. And boy, Fortnite looks nothing like Gears of War. It's also not Jazz Jackrabbit, we're afraid.

Fortnite has players building forts against invading monsters. Perhaps it's an expansion of Gears of War 3's Horde mode? The visuals are cartoony, and invite comparisons to Valve's Team Fortress 2.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron trailer features haunting music, robot face punching

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron trailer features haunting music, robot face punching

Music rarely moves me when paired with footage of giant robots reenacting their favorite scenes from Fight Club, but that doesn't mean it can't look cool.

During the Spike VGAs, High Moon Studios debuted a new trailer for Transformers: Fall of Cybertron. In the footage we watch a detailed battle between the Decepticons and Autobots, set to the haunting song 'The Humbling River' by Puscifer. It's no 'Dare to be Stupid,' but it'll do.

Amazing Spider-Man versus robots: the VGA trailer

Amazing Spider-Man versus robots: the VGA trailer

Do you love Spider-Man? Hate robots? Perfect! The debut trailer for Beenox's Amazing Spider-Man game adaptation has a lot of robots. So many robots. Shown at the Spike TV Video Game Awards, the trailer shows off your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man going against a gigantic robot in the middle of New York City.

Oddly, the VGA trailer doesn't show off much of the open-world swinging shown off to Comic-Con attendees earlier this year. Don't worry, Spider-Man does more than fight robots in the game--you just won't see that in this trailer.

Alan Wake's American Nightmare revealed

Alan Wake's American Nightmare revealed

If you're anything like me, you love you some Alan Wake. There was fear that Remedy's hero would never return from the darkness, but he has emerged to fight once more.

Wake's next adventure brings him to the Xbox Live Arcade in Alan Wake's American Nightmare, which was just revealed during in trailer form during the Spike VGAs. In the game's first footage, Wake reveals an evil copy of himself--dubbed Mr. Scratch--terrorizing the world he inhabits.

Rainbow Six Patriots CG trailer shows what's at stake

Rainbow 6: Patriots isn't set to debut until 2013. So, it comes as no surprise that tonight's VGA debut trailer was a CG conceptual trailer. Like before, the new trailer features terrorists, bombs, and guys being strapped to bombs unwillingly. It appears the terrorists have no shortage of explosives and belts.

The VGA reveal was very short, but it revealed that the sequel will be powered by Frostbite 2, the same engine that powered Battlefield 3.

The Last of Us developed by Uncharted team

The Spike TV Video Game Awards took only ten minutes to get to its first big reveal. The Last of Us, the long-teased mysterious PS3 exclusive, is reminiscent of the Dead Island debut trailer, showing a family struggling against monsters in a post-apocalyptic setting. The game is being developed by Naughty Dog, the team best known for their work on the Uncharted franchise.
