February NPD: PS4 and Xbox One are neck-and-neck

The newfangled 'console wars' roll on, as February saw the PlayStation 4 narrowly hold off the Xbox One, in terms of most units sold for the month. But it comes with a bit of a caveat, as the Xbox One is actually leading the two in terms of overall money made, due to its higher price tag. The NPD Group has announced that console hardware sales have increased 60 percent over this time last year, which is largely attributed to Sony and Microsoft's new machines.

Minecraft continues to reach new milestones. Mojang's combination of 3D adventure and item building has managed to reach 100 million registered users, according to the game's creator, Marcus "Notch" Persson. Of course, not everyone that registers buys the game, citing a 14.3% conversion rate on Twitter.

January NPD: PS4 punches back at Xbox One, both beat 3DS

Oh, what exciting times for the gaming industry. Now that both of the new consoles are out, we get to watch as they exchange blows from month to month. NPD data showed Xbox One beating out PlayStation 4 last month, and now the PS4 has countered by leading for this month. We're sure to see the two locked in this struggle for quite a while, so you may as well relax and get comfortable while you settle down with some sales data.

Dead Rising 3 ships one million in first month

Dead Rising 3 ships one million in first month

Dead Rising 3 was one of the better-reviewed Xbox One launch games, and its sales numbers seem to reflect that. Capcom has announced that in its first month, the zombie-slaying sequel surpassed one million units shipped. The figures didn't detail how many had been sold-through to players.

December NPD: Xbox One beats PS4, but 3DS comes out on top

December NPD: Xbox One beats PS4, but 3DS comes out on top

Before the NPD numbers even came out, Sony sent us an email reminding us that PS4 was "out of stock in December due to overwhelming demand." It sounded like Sony was blaming supply for what could have been a second-place finish against Xbox One. We were right.

Xbox One beat PS4 in console sales in December, but as before, there are a few caveats. When you combine both November and December, PS4 is still the best-selling next-gen console--and when you factor in global sales, PS4 clearly has the lead. However, while both new machines are having great, competitive launches, neither of them were able to beat Nintendo 3DS, the best selling system of all of 2013--not just December.

DayZ sells 1 million copies in 4 weeks

DayZ sells 1 million copies in 4 weeks

"So much for the death of PC Gaming," DayZ creator Dean Hall has scoffed, announcing that the zombie apocalypse survival sim's standalone version--which is still only in alpha--has now sold one million copies, less than a month after launching on Steam Early Access. Yes, sales were at 875,000 copies last week so this isn't a huge surprise, but one million is a nice big round number, and that is a fun jibe from Hall.

Nintendo 3DS software sales up 45% in 2013

Nintendo has boasted of a successful 2013 for the 3DS today. It tallied game sales for the year at 16 million across retail and the eShop, a 45% increase over the 2012 total. Though it didn't share specific hardware sales numbers, it did note that the lifetime sales of the handheld system passed somewhere beyond 11.5 million systems in the United States alone.

DayZ has sold 875,000 copies; in alpha until end of 2014

After a long wait, the alpha version of DayZ finally launched via Steam Early Access on December 16. While it's still very much in alpha, evidently that hasn't been too much of a discouragement for survival fans, as Bohemia Maruk Spanel has revealed the game's sold 875,000 copies over the past three weeks. Players better be prepared for a bumpy ride, though, as Spanel says DayZ's not expected to hit beta status "sooner than the end of 2014."

November NPD: PlayStation 4 tops hardware, with a caveat

November NPD: PlayStation 4 tops hardware, with a caveat

The November US sales figures kick off the first salvos of PlayStation 4 versus Xbox One, and like many stats, you could argue for either side. Sony's PlayStation 4 officially led the pack for the month's sales, and also set an NPD record for the highest first month sales of a hardware platform. But, NPD notes, PS4 had an extra week that Xbox One didn't, so if the sales are averaged on a per-week basis, Xbox One beat it out. In other words, PlayStation 4 sold more, but Xbox One sold faster. And both were likely constrained by supply, as NPD points out.

Call of Duty: Ghosts not declared biggest entertainment launch of the year

Call of Duty: Ghosts not declared biggest entertainment launch of the year

For the past four years, the day after the launch of a new Call of Duty game has seen Activision boldly declaring its latest man-shooter the new biggest entertainment launch ever. This year, the broken record skipped.

Perhaps due to staggering success of Grand Theft Auto V, Activision has changed this year's boast. $1 billion of Call of Duty: Ghosts has gone out to stores, the publisher announced this morning, declining to mention how much it actually sold.
