It looks like MMO server-vs-server warfare in Camelot will become a reality after Kickstarter project Camelot Unchained concluded its crowdfunding pitch with more than $2.25 million. The subscription-based game, which plays on the nostalgia of the MMO Dark Age of Camelot, will focus on crafting, realm vs. realm combat and player housing.

Brian Fargo has been an outspoken proponent of crowdfunding since before his company successfully kickstarted Wasteland 2. However, the inXile Entertainment CEO said that one of the biggest reasons he is thrilled with the process is no more outside interference on games the audience wants made.

inXile Entertainment's Torment: Tides of Numenera has set a new Kickstarter record as the most-funded video game in the crowdfunding site's history, wrapping up over the weekend with a whopping $4,188,927 in pledges. It raked in at least $127,000 or so in direct pledges too. The RPG's crowdfunding campaign isn't over quite yet, as inXile will keep things running until the end of April to try to hit its $4.5 million stretch goal of a stronghold for players to call their very own.

Ecco the Dolphin a game in which a porpoise saved sea animals and talked to magic crystals, was a rare case of a 16-bit game that was a quiet, meditative experience. Creator Ed Annunziata and his team have turned to crowd-funding for the game's spiritual successor, titled "The Big Blue."

When we look back at the year that was, the Kickstarter explosion is certain to be one of the most significant news stories of this year. Since Double Fine hit it big with an adventure game, we've seen scads of game developers following suit. But the outpouring of goodwill has a dark side, and some scams have already been exposed, so Kickstarter is taking more proactive steps to protect backers.

It had to happen eventually. This year has seen an explosion of independent projects funded by crowd-sourcing site Kickstarter, and it was only a matter of time before someone tried to take advantage of such goodwill for a scam. Such is the apparent case of "Mythic: The Story of Gods and Men," a project that raised eyebrows and has subsequently been canceled.
