In the past couple of years indie games have exploded across the videogame scene. Digital distribution channels afford small-scale game makers a reasonable way to get their games out. We play them now on our smartphones, on our consoles through Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network, and, as always, on our various personal computers whether laptop or desktop, Apple or Microsoft. Along with our sister site Indie Games Channel we've seen some of the most creative games of 2010 released as indies. While in many cases you'll be buying some form of digital gift certificate to give for these games, we wanted to share some of our favorites: indie games we'd like to get as gifts this holiday.

Sony's struggles with its handheld PlayStation Portable came to a head in 2010. Instead of sparking a rally, the launch of the PSP Go model late last year--which relies on users buying and downloading their games from the PlayStation online store--failed to spark renewed interest in the system. In fact, over the course of this year games came late to the digital distribution system, and in a few cases not at all, leaving owners of the new Go out in the cold.
Couple these struggles with the all-but-confirmed rumor of a new PlayStation Portable 2 coming in the New Year and we can't give the PSP system much of a recommendation as a gift this season. If, however, you do find one on your list we advise sticking to the standard model.
