Best of 2011 Honorable Mention: Saints Row The Third

Best of 2011 Honorable Mention: Saints Row The Third

After jumping out of (and into, and back out of) a moving plane, it's hard to believe Saints Row: The Third can keep its pace throughout the entire experience. Oh boy, does it. Volition's title, which in some instances can only be described as a fever dream, is over-the-top and fun. Saints Row: The Third isn't afraid to be nonsensical in its quest to be wholly entertaining. Sure, some of the gags fall flat, but it's crazy experience that goes beyond any other game in its genre (not the dildo bat genre, the open world one).

Staff Favorites 2011: Xav's picks

Staff Favorites 2011: Xav's picks

Crysis 2

Crysis 2 was, and remains, a phenomenal game. Though I had some problems with the game's narrative, it was a gorgeous experience that I enjoyed playing through. It's a shame that the title suffered greatly at the hands of pirates. Developer Crytek certainly deserves your money as a developer that continuously attempts to push the boundaries of any platform the company's titles land on. My preferred platform was PC (obviously, let's not kid ourselves) but the game was still impressive on console... and don't even get me started on how much fun the multiplayer can be. This is one you should buy if you missed it.

Shacknews 'Best of 2011' Awards

Shacknews 'Best of 2011' Awards

We put 2011 in the history books, and with that the time comes to recognize the best from the impressive collection of videogames released over the year. Before even getting to the nominees, though, we took a good look at the awards themselves. When we brought them back for 2010, we took a pretty standard approach, recognizing best of's for genres and platforms, special awards for unique attributes, and, ultimately, a game of the year. The result created confusion and dissatisfaction over what games qualified for which awards and, despite having so many of them, only calling out a few titles which then won multiple times.

Best of 2011 Honorable Mention: LittleBigPlanet 2

Best of 2011 Honorable Mention: LittleBigPlanet 2

LittleBigPlanet 2 is the quintessential sequel. It is, in every way, a bigger, better, and yes, more badass game than its predecessor. LBP2 does more than offer "more of the same." Given the original's infinite expandability offered by the UGC community, it's no wonder Media Molecule attempted something drastically different for the sequel.
