Luigi joins Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS

Luigi joins Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS

Here's the least shocking character reveal for Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS so far: Luigi. Given Luigi's presence in every Smash game so far, his inclusion seemed guaranteed. Also, it is "the Year of Luigi" after all.

Just in case you haven't been keeping track, you may want to check out the full roster so far.

Nintendo defends rapid release of new Mario games

Nintendo defends rapid release of new Mario games

Mario games used to be big events. Six years separated Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. Four years separated Gamecube's lone Mario game with New Super Mario Bros for 3DS. And now, with the upcoming release of Super Mario 3D World, we're on track to have three Mario games in two years. Has Nintendo diluted the brand?

"We think we're putting out the right number of Mario games based on what fans are asking for, based on what our own developers' creative visions are," Nintendo of America senior director of corporate communications Charlie Scibetta said. "The key to that is as long as there's innovation is occurring within the gameplay, as long as there's new features, then marrying the characters and the IPs that people love is the right call from our standpoint."

Nintendo explains 'why we're still in the hardware business'

Nintendo explains 'why we're still in the hardware business'

"Go third-party." That's the advice Nintendo has received for a long time. Even before the company shipped the massively-successful Wii, analysts have always been bearish on Nintendo's position as a hardware manufacturer.

But, so long as Nintendo's making games, they will not back down on making hardware. Nintendo of America senior director of corporate communications Charlie Scibetta told us that "Nintendo systems come to life the best when the hardware and software work in perfect harmony. That's why we're still in the hardware business, because we think our hardware is the best way to bring software to life."

Game Critics Awards reveals E3 2013 nominees

Every year, dozens of video game outlets--Shacknews included--vote on their favorite games from E3. The Last of Us won last year's awards, and that turned out pretty good. But what will take home the crown this year? Before the judges decide the ultimate winner, the organization has released this year's "Best of" nominees.

Titanfall takes not only the most nods this year, but ever in the history of the organization. Other top contenders include Destiny and Watch Dogs. Electronic Arts is the most nominated publisher of the year, with 16 nods. Finally, Xbox 360 is home to the most nominated games, with 37 nominations total, proving that current-gen is still a pretty great bet for gamers.

Killer is Dead preview: Mondo uncertainty

Killer is Dead preview: Mondo uncertainty

Even among the most ardent fans of Goichi Suda (aka "Suda 51"), I don't think it would be controversial to say that he specializes in style. Most of his major releases are marked by high-concept ideas and identifiable art styles, but the mechanics don't always match the ambition. Killer is Dead certainly has its own splashy stylistic identity, but as usual, some hands-on time made it hard to tell if the game would keep up.

Dragon's Prophet preview: how to catch your dragon

Dragon's Prophet preview: how to catch your dragon

Sony Online Entertainment may be known for their internally-developed MMOs: Planetside 2 and DC Universe Online. However, there they're also publishing a new MMO--one that sticks close to classic fantasy tropes. Dragon's Prophet, a free-to-play fantasy title from Runewaker Entertainment, delivers what it promises--dragons and lots of them.

Castle of Illusion preview: more than a repaint

Castle of Illusion preview: more than a repaint

Mickey Mouse was once a video game celebrity, thanks largely to a handful of beloved platformers starring the Disney mascot. Castle of Illusion was among the most fondly remembered, and in the era of HD remakes, another visit to the castle was inevitable. Judging by hands-on time at E3, Sega is striking a delicate balance between nostalgia and revisionism.

Final Fantasy XIV preview: limits break

Final Fantasy XIV preview: limits break

Final Fantasy XIV is approaching the finish line of a lengthy relaunch process that has been in the public eye for almost a year. Part of that has been preparing the game for PlayStation 3, but the port's showing at E3 2013 made me less eager to witness this rebirth.

IndieCade faves from E3: Spaceteam, Towerfall, 7 Grand Steps, Perfection, Voronoid, Soundodger

While IndieCade's E3 booth may not be as boisterous as others at the show, its impact cannot be denied. IndieCade has been home to games such as Braid, Dear Esther, and Skulls of the Shogun long before they were on anyone's radar and this year looks to continue that trend. Here are some of the more notable games I got to check out.

E3 racing roundup: Forza 5, GT6, DriveClub, The Crew, and NFS Rivals

E3 racing roundup: Forza 5, GT6, DriveClub, The Crew, and NFS Rivals

There was a common theme amongst game publishers last week at E3: many of them were announcing new racing games. In fact, every E3 press conference highlighted some upcoming racer. I spent time with every big new racing game at the show, and walked away with impressions of each. With so many options available, which E3 racer is right for you?

When we knew we were going to be getting a closer look at the new Thief during E3, we solicited some questions from the community on what you wanted to know about the new game. We got some time with Daniel Windfeld Schmidt, lead level designer on the game at Eidos Montreal, and he offered up some interesting answers.

Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z preview: fighting without honor

Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z preview: fighting without honor

Despite its title, Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z is not really a Ninja Gaiden game. It shares some passing similarities, but even the game's producers shy away from direct comparison to the notoriously difficult action titles. After talking to key team members and getting hands-on time, I understand why.

Sonic Lost World preview: finding his footing

Sonic Lost World preview: finding his footing

Sonic skepticism has become almost routine upon word of a new game announcement. The character platformer has had some decent hits, but on the whole his track record has encouraged what fans have dubbed the Sonic cycle. At risk of falling into that disappointing trap, what I saw so far of Sonic Lost World looks promising.
