Donkey Kong's return: 33 years of Nintendo's main monkey

Mario wasn't the only character to become an iconic mascot with the introduction of Donkey Kong into arcades in 1981. The titular ape has managed to earn his own following, and thanks to the efforts of many savvy developers, he's managed to stay relevant through over three decades of gaming.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze preview: challenge accepted

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze preview: challenge accepted

Donkey Kong's had to deal with reptiles and Tiki critters in the past, but Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze marks the character's first encounter with climate change. But Retro Studios has done more with the next DKC than simply change the temperature. Tropical Freeze offers up a true HD experience, while also refining a lot of what made Donkey Kong Country Returns enjoyable.

Shacknews went hands-on with four of Tropical Freeze's levels, all of which encapsulated a different aspect of the game. But whether I was swimming underwater or taking a ride on a mine cart, Tropical Freeze did a lot to improve the DKC experience while keeping it comfortably familiar.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze doesn't bother with the GamePad screen at all

Every Wii U game uses the GamePad in some way, even if it's as meaningless as putting a giant horn button a la Mario Kart 8. But Nintendo's next big Wii U release doesn't bother to use the GamePad for anything.

Fans hoping to get their hands on Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze for the holiday were given the cold shoulder when Nintendo delayed the Wii U title to February. To help ease the pain of that frigid news, Nintendo has released a new trailer that prominently displays the returning Dixie Kong. And as you might expect, she does indeed whip her hair back and forth.

Nintendo dates 2013 holiday games for Wii U and 3DS

With a Wii U price drop and the newly-announced 2DS handheld, Nintendo has the potential to market its games to a much wider audience. So, here's exactly what the publisher plans on bringing out until the end of the year.

The company's headline franchises Super Mario 3D World and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds will both launch on November 22--just in time for Black Friday. Going for a hat trick, that date will also see the release of Mario Party: Island Tour for 3DS.

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D preview: max slider

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D preview: max slider

There isn't much to say about Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, given that the original Wii game is a known quality. Retro Studios' 2D platformer was always a looker, playing with depth in a way that made the game feel far more dynamic and exciting than other games in the genre. It was a perfect fit for 3D, which is why it transitions so well onto 3DS. In fact, it's probably my favorite use of 3D on Nintendo's handheld so far.

Outside of Super Mario 3D Land, not many games have enticed me to turn the 3D slider on. And even when I turn it on, I usually keep it on the lowest possible setting. With Donkey Kong Country Returns, however, I found myself wanting to keep the 3D running at maximum strength.

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D to feature co-op, easy mode

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D is the next port to the system from Nintendo's back catalog. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Star Fox 64 3D were both retrofitted with new features, but DKCR is a much more recent game. What new bits and baubles is Nintendo adding to this one?
