MS: Not Counting Wii, X360 Dominates Worldwide

May 14, 2008 5:02pm CST tags: Microsoft, Instrustry News: Console
Update: Microsoft has confirmed to Shacknews that it did not take the Wii into account when it claimed the Xbox 360 as worldwide console leader.

"Xbox 360 has the largest global install base of any current gen. high definition gaming console, Wii excluded," the company clarified when asked how Xbox 360 could lead worldwide with 19 million when the Wii has sold 24.45 million.

Original Post: In a carefully worded press release, Microsoft today announced that the Xbox 360 is the first console of this hardware generation to sell over 10 million units in the United States.

"History has shown us that the first company to reach 10 million in console sales wins the generation battle," boasted Microsoft senior VP Don Mattrick. "We are uniquely positioned to set a new benchmark for the industry."

Despite Nintendo's Wii selling over 24.45 million units worldwide, Microsoft stated that Xbox 360 leads worldwide with sales of over 19 million units, which it... Read more

Microsoft Denies Rumored X360 Dashboard Update

May 14, 2008 1:58pm CST tags: Microsoft, Rumor
Microsoft has refuted the list of supposed Xbox 360 software update details that recently began floating around the internet.

"We don't comment on rumors or speculation, but what we can tell you is we've never seen this list before," a company representative told Joystiq.

The amazingly long list, which was supposed leaked from a inside source within Microsoft, specified a number of frequently requested changes, such as:

  • Game installation
  • The option to re-assign DRM-protected downloads
  • The ability to remove games from a GamerCard, assuming one had yet to earn any achievements
The list even went so far as to mention that oft-rumored motion controller.

For giggles, we've thrown the full list after the break: ... Read more

New Xbox Originals Downloads: Stubbs, Gauntlet

May 14, 2008 1:27pm CST tags: Xbox Live Marketplace, Xbox Originals
The Xbox editions of Stubbs the Zombie and Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows will be downloadable from the Xbox 360's online Marketplace next Monday, May 19, Xbox Live director of programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hyrb announced today.

Developed by Halo creator Alex Seropian and his crew at Wideload Games, Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse and its third-person perspective lets one or two players attempt to overrun a pristine utopia with zombie minions. Brains!

Midway's Gaunlet: Seven Sorrows, meanwhile, continues in the series' rich tradition of multiplayer-oriented action-RPG, er, action.

As with past releases in the Xbox Originals catalog--including Metal Arms, Ninja Gaiden Black, Halo and Psychonauts--each game will be priced at 1200 Microsoft Points ($15)

First Guitar Hero 4 Drum Kit Details Revealed; Compatibility with Rock Band Not Likely

May 14, 2008 12:33pm CST tags: Guitar Hero IV, Rock Band
When Neversoft's Guitar Hero IV (PS2, PS3, X360, Wii) arrives this fall, it may compete with Harmonix's Rock Band (PS2, PS3, X360, Wii) for more than just retail dominance--the battle of the bands may very well extend into your living space.

As revealed earlier this week, Neversoft's Guitar Hero IV (PS2, PS3, X360, Wii) will bring drum, vocal, and music creation support to the franchise. Now it appears GH4 may not be compatible with the Rock Band drum kits that are already in the homes of many gamers.

A picture of the wireless Guitar Hero IV drum kit, located within the pages Game Informer magazine's June issue, reveals it to have three drum pads, two cymbal pads and a foot pedal. That gives the kit a higher number of inputs and a different physical arrangement than the Rock Band drum set, which has four drum pads and a foot pedal.

Given these differences, it does not appear likely that Guitar Hero IV will be compatible with Rock Band's drum kits, especially taking the companies' past feuding into account. Shacknews has contacted both Harmonix and Neversoft owner Activision for comment.

PS3 Sales Top 12M Units, Compared to Wii and X360; Sony's Game Division Posts $1.24B Loss

May 14, 2008 11:53am CST tags: Sony, Industry News: Console
The PlayStation 3 hardware has sold over 12.85 million units worldwide since its 2006 debut, Sony has revealed. The figures were included within its results for the 2007 fiscal year, which concluded on March 31, 2008.

As both Nintendo and Microsoft have already chimed in with their worldwide sales figures as of March 31, 2008, the worldwide install bases of the three major home consoles are:

  1. Wii - 24.45 million
  2. Xbox 360 - 19 million
  3. PlayStation 3 - 12.85 million

In its 2007 fiscal year, Sony's Game division had an operating revenue of $12.83 billion and posted a $1.24 billion loss.

Across that time, Sony sold 13.73 million PlayStation 2 units, 13.89 millions PSP units, and 9.24 million PlaySation 3 units. Lifetime sales were not available for PS2 and PSP, as this is the first year Sony reported sales figures instead of shipment... Read more

MS: Expect 7 Years of Xbox 360 Support, At Least

May 14, 2008 10:55am CST tags: Xbox 360, Microsoft
Microsoft plans to support its Xbox 360 hardware until at least 2013, according to comments made by Microsoft Game Studios VP Shane Kim.

"We said from the beginning that we expect the Xbox 360 to have a long tail," Kim told CVG. "Admittedly, we don't have any experience doing this, but we're pretty confident."

He stressed that the Xbox 360 hardware would "absolutely" be around when Silicon Knights wraps up its X360 action-RPG trilogy Too Human, which developer president Denis Dyack hopes to conclude within seven years.

It was not clear if that seven-year figure included the two years the Xbox 360 edition of the trilogy has been in development. If not, that would put Kim on record as saying the Xbox 360 will be supported until 2015.

The first Xbox, which launched in 2001, was replaced by the Xbox 360 in 2005. Kim chalked up the earlier-than-expected demise of the original to "a strategic decision."

Competitor Sony has oft-repeated its expectations for a 10-year PlayStation 3 life cycle. The PlayStation 2, which launched in 2000, is currently in its eighth year of support.

Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts Preview

May 14, 2008 9:24am CST tags: Banjo Kazooie, Preview, Microsoft Spring Showcase
After the floodgates broke on coverage of Rare's new Banjo Kazooie game, you might've found yourself wondering whether this was the Banjo you remember. And depending on your slant, it can be interpreted as good news or bad news—it's familiar territory, certainly, but populated by a whole new breed of animal.

As you may well have heard by now, the new focus in Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts is, of course, vehicles. And from what we saw at Microsoft's Spring Showcase demonstration, the developer is not at all shy in making use of this new cornerstone of gameplay.

Banjo Kazooie QA lead Chris Chamberlain estimates that vehicle use takes up some 70% of total gameplay time, while traditional Banjo-style platforming assumes the remaining 30%. With such a significant portion of gameplay chalked ... Read more

Gears of War 2: CliffyB Presents the Third Chapter

May 14, 2008 1:20am CST tags: Gears of War 2, Preview, Microsoft Spring Showcase
Earlier today at the Microsoft Spring Showcase in San Francisco, I got a chance to check out an entire early level of Gears of War 2. The shorthand? It's Gears, but louder.

First the setup, courtesy series creator Cliff "CliffyB" Bleszinski: "It's six months after the events of Gears 1, and the Locusts have actually returned. We're right at the onset of winter, it's the last day of fall as we open the game. Basically the Locusts have returned with a force that's capable of sinking entire cities."

Faced with utter destruction, the last bastion of humanity suits up to take the fight into the underground home of the Locusts.

"The way that we do this is with a massive assault scenario, in which the humans have these devices called grind lifts," continued Bleszinski. "These are essentially express elevators to hell, in which two guys get in, and it tunnels down into the depths of the underground, and then they go into the Locust cities and kick their ass."

The opening of the sequel sees Marcus hooking up with an armored column on its way toward Locust-held territory, as seen in the few minutes of footage released last week. The whole of the chapter consists of an on-rails sequence, the player... Read more

CliffyB Teases 4-Player Co-op for Gears of War 2; Creator Promises 'Bigger and Better' Multi

May 13, 2008 9:49pm CST tags: Gears of War 2, Microsoft Spring Showcase
During Microsoft's Spring Showcase today, Epic Games employee and Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski teased that the much-anticipated cover-heavy sequel could include four-person cooperative play.

When asked directly if Gears of War 2 will feature four-player co-op, Bleszinski responded: "We're not announcing anything about co-op at this time, we'll probably get around to it around E3 time, but rest assured, it will be bigger and better."

"The multiplayer is incredibly robust," he continued. "We're not saying too much about it right now due to embargoes and whatnot, but lots of multiplayer maps, lots of modes. We'll have the multiplayer functionality that gamers have come to expect this day and age."

Gears of War 2 is slated to arrive on Xbox 360 this November. The original, which hit Xbox 360 in 2006 and PC in 2007, featured local and online two-person co-op play along with an eight-player online deathmatch mode.
