PlayStation 3 Games Getting Motion Control Patch, Xbox 360 Games Probably Won't

With the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 both set to receive new motion-tracking controllers next year, it has been revealed that some existing PlayStation 3 software will be updated with enhanced control schemes via patches while Xbox 360 games probably won't.

Though Microsoft has demonstrated the Xbox 360's motion-sensitive Project Natal camera with retrofitted versions of existing titles, such as Burnout Paradise and Beautiful Katamari, project head Kudo Tsunoda told Destructoid that such efforts required a significant amount of code to be changed--presumably more than a patch could.

Meanwhile, rival Sony used Tokyo Game Show to reveal that some existing PlayStation 3 games will be patched to support the upcoming PlayStation Motion Controller, including LittleBigPlanet, PAIN, Flower, EyePet, Hustle Kings and High Velocity Bowling.

In addition, Sony unveiled several upcoming titles that will make use of the wand-shaped ball-tipped device, including an "Alternate Edition" of Resident Evil 5, Ape Escape, Echochrome 2, Motion Party, Sing and Draw, The Shoot and Tower... Read more

PlayStation Motion Controller Slated for Spring 2010

Sony has revealed its expectations to the release the new PlayStation 3 Motion Control peripheral, which it claims will provide "true 1:1 tracking" and "true 3D pointing" when used in conjunction with the PlayStation Eye camera, in the spring of 2010.

"We are slating it for spring of next year," Sony executive Kazuo Hirai told Times Online when asked about the device during GamesCom last week. "One of the things is that we just don't want to put out the controller. We need a great software that supports the controller at launch. It's something that we've been working on for the longest time."

During its GamesCom press conference, Sony showed a new trailer for the device (below), and promised that more details on the specific games... Read more

Sony Reveals New Motion Tracking PS3 Controller with 'True 1:1 Tracking'

Jun 02, 2009 2:35pm CST tags: Sony, PlayStation Eye, PlayStation Motion Controller, E3 2009
PlayStation 3 maker Sony has just unveiled a new motion-sensitive controller for the console. Used in conjunction with the PlayStation Eye camera, the device offers "true 1:1 tracking" and "true 3D pointing."

By moving the wand-like controller and its glowing top forward, back, left and right, the demonstrator was able to walk around a room in first-person, aim, and shoot. Another demonstration showed the precision of the device with handwriting and painting.

There's an analog trigger on the controller as well, demonstrated with a spray paint application. Yet another demonstration saw the player dual wielding two controllers to control a shield and sword, with each offering 1:1 motion.

Perhaps most impressive was the bow and arrow demo, which saw the player motion behind his back to pull out a virtual arrow, with the devices' position used to aim and calculate accurate (virtual) tension in pulling back and firing arrows.

Dubbed PlayStation Motion Controller by Sony CEO Jack Tretton, the device is due out in spring 2010, with more information promised to be coming as that time approaches.

PS3, Xbox 360 Motion Controller Rumors Spread

May 01, 2009 7:04pm CST tags: Rumor, Sony, Microsoft, Project Natal, PlayStation Motion Controller
Rumors of motion controller-related announcements for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are beginning to propagate once again in advance of E3.

Variety cites several sources in a report that claims Sony is preparing to announce a new motion controller for the PlayStation 3. The purported device uses a webcam and LEDs to achieve an accuracy of motion greater than that of the Wii.

Meanwhile, a tipster writing into Engadget says that Microsoft is readying a full-body motion sensing device. The rumor would see a high-tech sensor bar detecting a full range of movement without the use of an actual handheld controller.

As many motion controller rumors have certainly been proven false in the past, the Shack doctor recommends taking two grains of salt and calling us after the show.
