Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima announced a new PSP-only entry in the stealth-action franchise at Sony's E3 press conference today.

Dubbed Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, the game is due out in 2010. Set in the 1970s, it takes place roughly ten years after Metal Gear Solid 3, and follows Big Boss along with the formation of Outer Heaven.

"I can say that this is the true sequel of the Metal Gear Solid franchise," explained Kojima. The creator added that he will produce and write the game, clarifying that it's "not a spin-off and not a side story."

A trailer for the title added that it's the legendary "missing link" in the Metal Gear saga.

Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima himself today announced that the traditionally stealth-action Metal Gear Solid series is headed to the Xbox 360.

The next title in the franchise, Metal Gear Solid: Rising, was announced to be in development for the console. The game will center around Metal Gear character Raiden, with a subtitle of "Lightning Bolt Action."

"I can promise you that it is a completely new Metal Gear experience," said Kojima, who then noted that he couldn't say anything more about the game.

Update: Konami's official announcement for MGS: Rising bills the title as the first MGS game "to launch on the Xbox 360," but does not refer to it as an Xbox 360 exclusive.

Kojima Teases New Metal Gear Reveal at E3

Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima has teased that he could announce a new entry in the stealth-action series in June during the upcoming Electronic Entertainment Expo.

"Maybe we can do some announcement during E3," he said today during a question and answer session held at a San Francisco Apple Store, according to GameSpy.

"I can't really speak specifically right now," he added. Kojima is known to have four unannounced projects in the works, with the first releasing as soon as this year.

Kojima was there to promote the recent iPhone release of Metal Gear Solid Touch.

He briefly teased "the next MGS" during his presentation at this week's Game Developers Conference, but did not offer any concrete details beyond its existence.

Once again taking place at the Los Angeles Convention Center, E3 officially runs June 2-4, with publishers and developers undoubtedly making announcements all week.

Metal Gear Creator: 'I Want to Make the Impossible'

Mar 26, 2009 3:48pm CST tags: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, GDC 09, Kojima Productions
Metal Gear series creator Hideo Kojima today took the stage at the Game Developers Conference to discuss his vision of the future for the Kojima Productions team.

"I want to add both [the] Western way of designing and the Japanese way," he said.

He explained that Western studios focus more on overcoming hurdles through software technology, and can thus create an open-world with no loading screens or the ability to drive any vehicle, whereas Japanese developers circumvent hurdles via game design.

But by utilizing the best of both approaches, Kojima believes that he and his team can "really challenge this wall of impossibility," ideally in future Metal Gear Solid games.

"By overcoming the barriers of impossibility, yesterday's impossibilities become today's possibilities," he explained. "People thought that going to the moon was... Read more

Metal Gear Creator Expects New Game This Year, 'Addicted to Left 4 Dead'

Jan 14, 2009 4:51pm CST tags: Left 4 Dead, Kojima Productions
The first of Hideo Kojima's upcoming unannounced projects could hit as soon as this year, according to a Weekly Famitsu interview translated by IGN.

In all, the Metal Gear series creator has a total of four unannounced projects in the works, going by the 1UP translation of the same piece. Two of those were previously mentioned, with Kojima once again affirming that he is working on "a rather challenging project I'm working on to compete against the overseas industry."

That said, the "challenging" project won't be the one unveiled in the coming months, nor is it likely to be the one he expects to arrive this year. Nothing else is known of the games, though rumors suggest the overseas-aimed title is a first-person shooter.

And while Kojima has previously discussed how first-person games make him sick, that apparently hasn't stopped him from playing Valve's recent zombie... Read more

Metal Gear Creator Working on Two New Games

Dec 26, 2008 10:52am CST tags: Kojima Productions, Konami
Acclaimed video game designer Hideo Kojima has revealed that he is directing two new games, as well as restructuring his development team to be more competitive.

One of those two Kojima-directed titles will be geared towards overseas gamers, according to a 1UP translation of an interview in Japanese gaming publication Famitsu. As Kojima's past third-person games have fared well worldwide, many speculate that the title is a first-person shooter, as the genre is popular in the West.

The overseas-targeted title will coincide with the restructuring of developer Kojima Productions, which the creator described as "a makeover from the ground up." Kojima hopes this will result in a studio that can compete with top developers around the world.

Along creating with the stealth-action Metal Gear series, Kojima has played a role in many other beloved titles, including the mech-combat franchise Zone of the Enders, the adventure-action game Snatcher, and the sun-utilizing vampire-slaying Boktai titles.

Details on the other game were sparse, with the creator only noting that it will be formally unveiled first and will be developed in a more traditional Kojima Productions environment, instead of fully embracing the shifts that the reorganization will bring.

Konami Unveils 'Next Metal Gear'

After weeks of teasing "a next Metal Gear", series publisher Konami has officially announced that the popular stealth-action franchise is coming to the iPhone.

Dubbed Metal Gear Touch, the game was revealed alongside three other Konami iPhone projects: Frogger, Silent Hill: The Escape, and DanceDanceRevolution S Lite.

Due spring 2009, Metal Gear Solid Touch is a "touch shooter," and will initially pack 8 levels based off Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3). More stages will be added post-release.

The Metal Gear Touch logo matches up with the teaser image for "a next Metal Gear," confirming that the teased project and Metal Gear iPhone are one and the same.

Konami's other three iPhone efforts will be available "from late December 2008." While Frogger and Dance Dance Revolution appear as one would expect, the third-person survival horror series Silent Hill has become a first-person shooter in the transition.

Kojima: 'A Next Metal Gear' Reveal Coming in Weeks (Update)

Dec 16, 2008 10:00pm CST tags: Kojima Productions
Update: It appears that the new Metal Gear project could in fact be an iPhone title, as images from Famitsu via Wii@Everyday seem to suggest.

Original story: Metal Gear series creator Hideo Kojima now says that the "next Metal Gear" project, referred to in a recent teaser image, will be revealed "literally in a few weeks."

Kojima, who made the comment in a 1UP interview, also noted that he is working on a new, non-Metal Gear related project, though did not provide any specific details.

A new Kojima Productions teaser site went live several days ago, including the words "A Next Metal Gear is..." and several cryptic images.

Fans have speculated that the project could be anything from an Xbox 360 port of Metal Gear Solid 4, to a iPhone or Nintendo DSi title.

Metal Gear Solid Creator Has Multiple Sequel Ideas, But Wants to 'Create Something New' Instead

Sep 26, 2008 10:57am CST tags: Metal Gear Solid 5, Kojima Productions
Metal Gear Solid creator and series director Hideo Kojima has a couple different ideas about the inevitable Metal Gear Solid 5, but he doesn't want to use any of them.

"I have three concepts for MGS5 already," he told 1up. "What would be ideal for me with MGS5, though, is that we don't do those. If the team picks one of those concepts, I have to get involved again, which I don't want to do."

Kojima has repeatedly tried to step away from his involvement with the Metal Gear Solid games. After Metal Gear Solid 3 (PS2), he claimed that he was finished with the series--only to direct the recently released sequel Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3).

Instead, he hopes the Kojima Productions team will pursue one of the "many good ideas" it has come up with for the stealth-action sequel. "At that point I could really rely on them and take the step back to be the producer, which is the ideal situation," he said.

"I want to create something new, and it's difficult to explain since no one's seen it before," Kojima concluded. "I don't know if it would sell very well. I've been warming this up for a long time, and I keep thinking that I'll try this idea. But ideas always change, so I really don't know what the final outcome will be."

New Metal Gear Solid Unveiled via Trademark

Sep 19, 2008 10:46am CST tags: Metal Gear Solid 5, Kojima Productions
Mere weeks after ex-MGS4 producer Ryan Payton confirmed that Metal Gear Solid 5 is on the way from developer Kojima Productions, publisher Konami has filed a trademark for the phrase Metal Gear Solid Existence.

The registration, uncovered by Siliconera, lacked any other relevant details, though applications for the Existence trademark were made in both the US and Japan.

Kojima Productions recently brought the series' stealth-action antics to the PlayStation 3 through this year's long-awaited release of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

While MGS4 was said to conclude the storyline of series protagonist Solid Snake, Payton previously stated that the series would not end there, later noting that the franchise had "a lot of room for filling in the gaps as far as [series antagonist and MGS3 lead] Big Boss is concerned."

Metal Gear Solid 5 Confirmed, MGS 4 'Probably Not Possible' on Xbox 360

Following teases of a new entry in the stealth-action series, now-former Kojima Productions employee Ryan Payton has confirmed that Metal Gear Solid 5 is on the way.

"It'll be hard not being involved in MGS5, but I've got the utmost confidence that Hideo Kojima, Ken Imaizumi, and our amazing team will put together another blockbuster game," Payton told Kotaku in an interview regarding his departure.

In addition to handling the studio's podcast, Payton served as a producer for Metal Gear Solid: Portal Ops (PSP) and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PS3).

Meanwhile, series creator Hideo Kojima expressed his thoughts on multiplatform development and noted his frustration with constant inquiries regarding the oft-rumored possibility of Metal Gear Solid 4 on Xbox 360.

"Because MGS4 was optimized for the PS3 it is probably not possible... Read more
