As the relationship between cable television network Syfy (formerly Sci Fi Channel) and video game publisher THQ continues to blossom, Syfy has revealed plans to bring another of THQ's video game franchises to television in the form of Red Faction.

The explosive video games, set amidst the volatile political landscape of Mars, are to be transformed into a two-hour movie that will air on Syfy. According to Broadcasting & Cable, the movie will also serve as a pilot for a potential television series.

The third entry in the video game series, Red Faction: Guerrilla, was released on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2009. A fourth is currently in the works, "produced in conjunction with Syfy Games" and due out no later than March 31, 2011.

Chris Faylor was previously a games journalist creating content at Shacknews.

I love the first Red Faction, and I thought Guerrilla was pretty fun, but this is the lamest thing I've heard about since that other really lame thing I heard about.

I don't think it will be that bad, if they do it right. In Guerrilla, they do a decent job telling you that the good guys are now the bad guys, but they don't go into tremendous detail about the few decades in between the second game and the third. If they get the right people to do it (Battlestar, Caprica, SG:U, for example), and good writers to flesh out the history and characters (Strazynski, would be solid for that role), then I think there is a ton of potential there.

Then again, they did produce Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus... So who knows?
