Microsoft: Xbox 360 Disc Scratching Affects 'Less Than 1 Percent' of Owners
"While we have had some users contact us with concerns about scratched discs, it is much less than 1 percent of the total Xbox 360 user base," Microsoft told Edge. "Xbox 360 is designed so that it will not damage a game disc as long as the console is not moved while the disc is spinning."
"Too much movement of any game console, not just Xbox 360, can cause scratches on a disc," the company added. "That's why we put a warning on the face of the disc tray."
According to a recently unsealed legal document, Microsoft was aware of the issue before the console launched, with an employee claiming that over 55,000 customers had complained of scratched discs by April 2008.
The motion claims that Microsoft explored several options to resolve the problem, eventually settling on a warning label and a disc replacement program.
As of November 2008, 25 million Xbox 360s have been sold worldwide.
