Get Resistance 2 Beta Access via Pre-order or Qore; Online Co-op Campaign Uses Multiplayer Maps

26

Update: Insomniac Games has informed Shacknews that Qore represents "only one way into the public [Resistance 2] beta," which is planned for worldwide availability.

"There will be many ways in, including a pre-order program we'll announce soon that will grant the earliest access to the public beta," noted Insomniac's James Stevenson.

Original Story: The August issue of Sony and Future Publishing's downloadable PlayStation 3 video magazine Qore, priced at $2.99, will contain an exclusive invitation to the online beta for Insomniac's upcoming first person shooter Resistance 2 (PS3).

Resistance 2 is slated to include 60-person online class-based competitive multiplayer and 8-person online cooperative play in addition to the expected single player mode.

The class-based co-op campaign will have players facing off against AI opponents and sub-bosses in the game's multiplayer maps, Insomniac recently confirmed to Shacknews, with players able to unlock new abilities by earning experience.

The beta is slated to begin in late September, going by the Sony-issued mailing that broke the news, though it contained no details on the included modes.

The full version of Resistance 2 hits retailers in November. Qore is released on a monthly basis via the online PlayStation Store, with the next issue due August 7.

Chris Faylor was previously a games journalist creating content at Shacknews.

Co-op is overrated. The whole idea of a single player game is that it's single-player. If you want to play with other people, get an MMO or do multiplayer proper.

Co-op is SP/MP crossover. Teaming up with a human to go through the Single Player Missions/Campaign, killing AI. I don't understand the difficulty making co-op work, with so many games having squads nowadays.
And it's CERTAINLY not overrated. DoomAliens proved that. Actually, wait...D&D Basic Edition proved that.

Cooperative campaign is pretty hard to pull off- mainly because it's hard to make cool one-player-only scripted events work well with more than one player.

Allow me to put it to you thusly, one of the major reasons so many Halo fans loved their game was the outstanding co-op. It was just plain fun to play.

Let me state this another way: I will not play this game if it does not have true co-op. That is co-op though the SP campaign.

8 person co-op. You're really going to snob your way out of buying this game?

If it is not campaign co-op, yes. I always play with another friend. I've been doing that since the days of the NES (Rescue Rangers, anyone?)

Just because it takes place in the multiplayer maps doesn't mean that isn't feasible.

For example, if the battlefield is already filled with AI, it wouldn't be hard to throw in Nathan Hale and his squad at points.

Co-op on multiplayer maps = Rainbox Six terrorist hunt. Eh.

However, T-hunt was FUN! And you could play on the SP maps. (do the R6:Vegas titles still have that mode?)

Real co-op? You mean people co-operating to defeat bad guys? I'm pretty sure that's still there.

he probably means through the same exact levels as single player. like halo 1/2/3 gears of war, etc. that's what i assume real co-op means because that is what it is.

never thought for a second they would have 8 player coop in the single player campaign though. still a let down if there is no coop there.

I understand that this is different from the traditional co-op, but if it involves players cooperating towards a common goal, I don't see how it isn't "real". When I play Warcraft 3 or Starcraft on battle.net on a team with friends vs. computers, I don't feel like I'm not "really" cooperating with them just because it's not a single player campaign.

With the narratives in FPS's today, single player campaign co-op is impractical anyway. The long dialogue sessions, cutscenes, etc. just serve as obstacles between the next action sequence. If this stuff is skippable, then the whole point of a campaign is lost anyway. I don't mind sitting around and watching dialogue and cutscenes when I'm alone, but when I'm online, I kind of want to get to the action. I'm interested in seeing what Insomniac can do to provide a unique co-op experience using multiplayer maps. With the 60 player limit, the maps are probably massive, Battlefield 2 sized maps, so a multi-objective based campaign within those maps seems entirely feasible.

I understand that some people just aren't good at FPS's. Some can't make it through the single player campaign by themselves, and need a skilled friend to pull their dead weight around so they can experience the storyline. That's a bummer, but they can always swallow their pride and play on "easy".

(that last paragraph was a joke btw)

do ya take everything so literal? it's not like this style of co-op is fake, it's still coop, but it's not the real deal. meaning it's not the actual campaign being played with friends, it's an additional or secondary feature. it has the potential to be just as good or even better than the single player campaign, but that doesn't mean it's not disappointing. some of us like coop with story and the rest. i'll put up with anything to play the single player game with a friend, but usually you can skip the cutscenes, and you proably will if you've both seen them. that doesn't mean the point of the campaign is lost. the main draw is playing the actual sp game, levels, missions, scripted scenes and bosses with some friends.

The Co-op and regular 60 man modes both sound awesome. "Real" co-op would defeat the purpose of single player.

how so? have you never played a coop game? think of it as two player instead of single player. it's the same thing but with a friend. how does that defeat the purpose? if anything it strengthens it because you get to experience it with someone else.

i've never seen so much nonsense before.
