Vancouver based Threewave Software today announced that it is licensing the Source Engine. Valve's engine will be used for several PC projects, including a first person shooter "The first Source-based project is a first-person action title that extends Source's advanced physics system to open new gameplay dynamics, as well as provide a unique opportunity for sponsors to reach gamers in the first-person shooter genre".

      Sounds like in-game advertising...

Also The first Source-based project is a first-person action title that extends Source's advanced physics system to open new gameplay dynamics

What the hell does that mean? If it means advanced physics in a multiplayer FPS, then cool.. if not.. then its not the 'first'

It sounds to me like some kind of FPS competitive game (like q3's demonic ctf soccer mode, ut2k4's bombing run, etc) where ads make sense (played on a stadium) and where they use physics for, well, something.

Given how their CEO has said how cool it would be to have "a Pepsi branded level where you jump through a Pepsi logo", I'm not surprised that one of the few things they've revealed about their upcoming project is that it is "a unique opportunity for sponsors to reach gamers". It also doesn't make me really look forward to it.

Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised... maybe they'll release a super-spectactular game that uses advertising in a subtle, appropriate, non-invasive fashion. But when in-game advertising is at the forefront whenever they talk about their company or their upcoming projects, that makes me more than a little wary about where their priorities are.

It's their first, not 'a' first.

Threewave is run by Dan Irish now. He's the person who royally fucked up Homeworld 2, so Im not particularly eager to see what new things he can mess up.

What did he do to it?

He told it he loved it and then never called again.

The story is pretty pathetic and full of plot holes and magical randomly appearing plot devices, the game changed so many of the good things from homeworld and left in the bad things.

I remember the difficulty-scaling thing was terrible, but otherwise I thought it was decent enough. I think I generally enjoyed Homeworld: Cataclysm more, though.
