Video games and theme parks have a lot in common. They both tend to be an escape from the every day hum-drum. So it what appears to be a logical pairing, Nintendo will be bringing many of its characters and themed worlds to Universal Studios locations around the globe.

The creative teams for the two companies are working together to bring Nintendo's heroes and villains, and the themed settings from its games to Universal parks in Orlando, Hollywood and Japan. Attractions, shops and restaurants are planned, as well as some interactive experiences, perhaps involving the Switch and Wii U. The companies plan a staggered rollout of different projects among the three parks.

A press release from Universal said the two companies have been already collaborating for some time, and that each park would make its own announcements on what Nintendo-themed areas would be opening and when. The release said the first reveal would be coming in the near future.

In the video below, Shigeru Miyamoto seems genuinely excited by the prospect of bringing his creations to life. Miyamoto had been spotted at Universal with a film crew back in October, so now we know what they were up to. It will be interesting to see how they will be designed to appeal to both kids and the inner-child of adults who grew up mplaying Nintendo games.
