Xbox One wired controller headed to PC this fall

Microsoft announced a new wired Xbox One controller will be released later this fall for PC gamers.

PC gamers who have been wanting to use an Xbox One controller have been able to do so since as early as this summer, so long as they installed Microsoft’s drivers for it. But if you’ve been wanting to enjoy long sessions with the controller without having to recharge its battery, Microsoft has announced a wired Xbox One controller will be available this fall.

The “Xbox One Controller + Cable for Windows” is a nearly identical replica of the standard Xbox One controller, even going as far as costing the same amount, which is $59.95. Even the USB cable has a small LED light to show power is being supplied to the controller.

In fact, if you’re looking to purchase an Xbox One controller and don’t mind being tethered to the console, then this new controller probably makes the most sense to purchase as it’ll save you from buying the standard Xbox One wireless controller and Play & Charge Kit and just purchase a compatible rechargeable battery.

Yep and the DS4 isn't ideal in Windows either.

It'd be nice if the Xinput support was official, but there's nothing wrong with the available driver. I use it all the time.

It's not consistently reliable over BT. Watch Rudds and the gang on giantbomb use 4x360 controllers on a PC with very very few issues, the thought of using ONE on my PC is daunting (DS4) let alone 4 of the fucking things.

They just press the button, it turns on, seems to auto sync (!!) and number themselves 1->4 - fucking great./

KILLS me the DS4 doesn't have really good support, it's an amazing piece of controller hardware
(stereo out, mic in, thumbpad, controller, rumble all in one) - impressive BT credentials.

I use it all the time on my pc, via bluetooth, and it's fine. I'm speaking from personal experience.

And once paired, it's basically what you describe. Tap home to wake it up and connect and it works.

Also, even if it works for you, the way you describe, it's still also somewhat annoying (but not so bad) that the headset isn't an option on it yet, (mic / speaker) :/ although not as big an issue.

Even when it does work, I'm having range issues too :/ the drop outs are regular - with multiple BT dongles on my PC or my HTPC :/

Well I haven't had any issues with any of that - range, disconnects, anything. I'm just using a cheapo $10 ASUS bluetooth USB adapter.

Makes me wonder if you have a conflicting radio source nearby.

The 360 pad works on a different frequency and so might not be affected.

I used it on my PC, I'm speaking from personal experience too.
It REGULARLY had to be "full re-syncd" (remove device, put controller into BT pair mode, re-pair) then "stop / start" my program - works fine after that
But I had to do it, regularly and it sucked.

I mean fuck it got so common it's why I made this video for the people at the forums

Why? It worked fine for me. You have to use that little program thingy but it connected via bluetooth perfectly and shit. IDK.

It worked moderately well for me - but compared to the 360 controller under Windows, which "just works" it's a far cry from that.

Watch GiantBomb, they have 4 fucking 360 controllers (I assume a single receiver?) and they fuck up - or need to change batteries, they quit the game, everyone puts batteries in, presses the 360 sync button and fucking BAM - 4 goddamn controllers "just work"

DS4 is sync this do that and then it REGULARLY loses fucking sync. You don't just hit the PS button on a DS4 and "it just works" - not even close. a lot of SCP stop SCP start within the driver - and that's on my good PC where it's reliable! On my HTPC with a Logitech BT keyboard? Mother.fucking.nightmare - the 2 hate each other :/

            Drop out, re-sync, re-pair bullshit
Drop out, stop / start driver bullshit
Drop out - keyboard or controller "lagging" bullshit
            Worst.

Weird, it worked great on mine. I even had the DS4 program thingy set up so I could turn it off by pressing the ps4 button and then turn it back on by tapping it and it'd reconnect immediately. Maybe ur bluetooth adapter sucks.

I'm ordering the Asus BT400 now, it's apparently the best one. I still feel like the issue is drivers though.

just get the old windows 360 controller, it's probably cheaper and it's (i assume from this article) basically the same. it comes with a wireless adapter so you can use standard 360 controllers with it.

The problem is that sucks for several reasons.
1, if it was the DS4 or the XBOne controller with good Windows support, then at least it could be a secondary / backup controller for your console - but a 360 controller is (somewhat) useless as the console dies out.
2, the XBOne controller, if I'm reading it right doesn't work wirelessly
3, eventually the 360 controller will become somewhat rare (related to item 1)

Nope, either the DS4 or the Xbox One NEED proper, proper reliable Windows 7/8 support ongoing, to become the new defacto PC controller.

Much like wheel support for the PS4 / Xbox One, some things I'm convinced are actually going backwards :/

I'd rather have wired than wireless. Wireless = more input lag.

For most things it's fine. If you absolutely need split-second frame-perfect timing (think tournament-level fighting game play) then you need a wired controller. Otherwise, the current crop of wireless controllers are perfectly fine.

            September 17, 2014 2:28 PM

It feels better would be the most simple explanation. Any game that has proper directjoy control (aka, using directX for joystick input) works flawlessly. Some games, like Super Hexagon do not work with it at all except the L1 and R1 buttons.

It's been great, it's a really nice controller.

I'm currently on the 360 controller, it's been pretty great except for the D-pad. Did they improve it on the X1 controller?

                September 17, 2014 2:34 PM

That they did according to other users. I haven't used the DPAD on mine, so I cannot say. Everyone else has said it is a good improvement.

I'd have you ask maulla, he has the most experience with the Xbox One controllers here.

The Xbox One Controller is backwards compatible, meaning any game that supported the 360 controller also support the One controller.

You can. Which is why I really don't understand what this article is trying to convey?

Unlike the Wireless 360 controller, the Xbox One controller DOES send input through the USB cable. Meaning it's no longer required to have a "wired" only version of the controller to use it with the PC.

I thought the wireless Xbox 360 controller will send data through the cable if it's plugged in, without the special Wifi dongle thing though (doesn't it???)

            September 18, 2014 6:32 AM

It does not, the wireless 360 controller will only charge through the cable.

              Ahhh hah, what a clusterfuck.
So the Xbox One has wifi or cabled support but no wifi dongle.
IF they make a wifi dongle, the shoulder buttons are rumoured to be kinda ho hum

The Xbox 360 wireless doesn't work when cabled - and it's going to "die out" anyhow as the XBO and DS4 controllers become the defacto PC controller for PC gamers and console / PC gamers.

              Messy and unfortunate.
