Disney Interactive first announced Star Wars: Attack Squadrons as a new free-to-play online space combat game at the end of 2013. A mere six months later, the publisher has announced that they're pulling the plug on the Area 52-helmed project following a lengthy closed beta period.

"We want to thank all of the fans who participated in the closed beta of Star Wars: Attack Squadrons," reads the front page of the Star Wars Attack Squadrons website. "After much consideration, we have decided to cease development so that we can focus on other Star Wars game experiences. We truly appreciate the time you spent engaging in the beta."

All features of the game's website are no longer available. The game's YouTube account has likewise been shut down.

Star Wars: Attack Squadrons had planned to support three PvP modes for up to 16 players, with deathmatch, team battles, and Base Defense among them. Area 52 had planned to support the game with microtransactions and roll out regular updates that included ships, items, and upgrades.
