League of Legends boasts 27 million players daily

Riot's free-to-play Dote 'em up League of Legends is kind of a big deal, you've probably heard, and even bigger than we knew. The developer has released new figures revealing that 27 million players are LoLing ever day, and 67 million every month, boasting that this makes LoL "the most played video game in the world."

Riot's official site (via the Wall Street Journal) also details that it has 7.5 million concurrent players daily during peak hours. The game has more than doubled since October 2012, when Riot revealed LoL had 32 million players monthly, 12 million daily, and 3 million during peak hours.

For comparison, Dota 2, Valve's fancy free-to-play remake of the mod which also inspired LoL, tends to have a top concurrent playercount of about 600,000 on weekdays, pushing 650,000 on weekends. Riot may be cherrypicking special days for its stats, but LoL's clearly obscenely bigger.

LoL's big enough that professional players have been granted US visas as professional athletes, setting a precedent for pro gamers playing other games.

    • No I can see it. While I do think Dota 2 is mechanically superior in some ways, LoL has a somewhat easier learning curve on entry. Dota 2 also has interface issues where desired controls or features are indeed present but aren't readily obvious. Combine this with LoL has what looks like a more effective business model. While Dota 2 has a more generous one, I think LoL's restrictive yet generous model keeps players wanting to play because they have a feeling like there is something they want to earn. Dota 2's skin system (while pretty damn cool) doesn't have the same sense of presence or simplicity.

I don't know if it is just me but there is also something about Dota 2 that makes my eyes strain. For some reason it just feels too zoomed in and horizontally wide. I think for some reason it feels like the field of view doesn't allow for what is ahead above and below. I can't put a fix on what causes this for me but it's the biggest reason why I can't play Dota 2.

It's a shame because Dota 2 is on the inside a better game than LoL It just has a bunch of wrinkles that need to be ironed out.
