Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII trailer explains it all
Ah, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, that's... the MMORPG, right? No, no, the sequel-sequel which became a sequel! Or... what is it, again? Handily, Square Enix has whipped together explaining the whole shebang, from its world and story to combat and questing. And chocobos. There are always chocobos.

Lighting Returns is due February 11 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. For people who want to see out the current generation of Final Fantasy in style, there's a fancy $90 Collector's Edition.

"..instead of choosing options from a menu.."
Hey! I love choosing options from a menu!! Turn-based combat FOREVER! For me the perfect recipe is real-time, action-based world exploration where you can see the enemies you are going to fight (not a fan of random pop-up encounters) with party-based, fully turn-based (not timed) combat. Not too many of those around really...
But this game actually looks kind of interesting to me. It seems like a Final Fantasy game done in a Xenogears kind of style. The last Final Fantasy game I put a lot of time into was on the SNES... so this would be a strange time to start. But this is the first one I've been interested in for a while.
One thing I have to say is the Square-Enix does have some talented artists. Their environment, monster, character and clothing design is usually pretty impressive. They could use a bit more effort in differentiating genders... but maybe that is Yoshitaka Amano's influence still? He's weird that way (but also one of my favorite artists of all time). -

Whenever people say "I want a fully voiced Zelda, why does it still have text" I cringe because I immediately think Final Fantasy, badly dubbed anime with horrible/stilted dialogue, and (nightmare of nightmares) the voice work in Sonic Adventure or whatever on Dreamcast (it was so bad that it managed to warp around past funny and reach bad all over again).
I think there's something to be said for text in some games.

It feels like they're going after the AssCreed crowd and slapping a "Final Fantasy" on the box. I'd like to see them return to their roots of the series.
Final Fantasy VI was epic without being overly dramatic/angsty/emo/convoluted. I'd kill for a true Final Fantasy Tactics sequel. WTF about Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross universe? Secret of Mana? The remake of Final Fantasy IV was excellent (for PSP).
Now I'm depressed. BRB, getting vodka martini. -

I really liked the first X3, despite not being a FF fan in the past. It had a very WoW/MMO feel to the combat system and I got really good at it.
X3-2 just became too god damn convoluted, both in story and gameplay. (And the first's story was pretty convoluted). I hope they simplify things a bit with this one.
