Thief bank heist mission offered as pre-order bonus

Pre-ordering is, of course, generally foolish unless you're offered something decent in return for buying a game before reviews, whether it be a discount or an awfully snazzy bonus. The new Thief is hoping to lure in nostalgics and crime-lovers with an "exclusive" mission named The Bank Heist.

Publisher Square Enix describes The Bank Heist as "a true homage to the Bank mission in Thief II: The Metal Age." It sends Garrett sneaking into the Stonemarket First Bank to steal a family heirloom named the Star of Auldale (and whatever else he can get his mitts on). Banks being pretty secure places, it'll include security systems not seen anywhere else in the game.

Eidos Montreal ruffled a few feathers with its last bonus pre-order DLC. The Tong's Rescue mission for Deus Ex: Human Revolution included a cameo appearance from a key Deus Ex character, which people were naturally quite keen to see. The DLC was sold separately after a while, as I imagine this will surely be too, but it stuck in some's craws. Look, a bank:

Now I am not sure I ever did the Rescue Tong mission. Steam says I own it.

Likely to get this one from the bargain bin aka a Steam sale. Nothing I have seen so far has conviced me that this game isn't a casualized cash-grab.

I'm an old school Thief player. I don't do DLC.

I have zero problems with DLC. I don't like preorder bonuses, especially when they vary by retailer.

I don't really care about DLC or preorder bonuses but this is not the Thief game I want to play.

If this sells like gangbusters they would have zero reason to revive the old Garret.

They "already" did. As far as I can tell this shifted from a reboot to a sequel with reimagined elements to appeal to a wider audience.

In the Shacknews interview they made reference to the previous games leaving them not much left to do with the previous big three organizations.

Now with the reveal that before the new game starts Garret's female apprentice was stuffed into a fridge, I have little doubt left and will until the release shows otherwise assume it is intended to be a narrative sequel.
