Weekend Confirmed 171 - Xbox One, The Last of Us Spoiler-Cast

By Ozzie Mejia, Jun 28, 2013 11:00am PDT

With Jeff Cannata absent, host Garnett Lee is left to discuss the beginning of the summer doldrums. He welcomes in "Indie" Jeff Mattas and Nikole Zivalich to discuss any final Xbox One thoughts before shifting to Borderlands 2's Assault on Dragon's Keep DLC and discuss the pros and cons of the Season Pass model. Shacknews' Andrew Yoon joins the show for the latter half to help briefly discuss Company of Heroes 2, before ending the normal part of the show a little early with some Finishing Move. That paves the way for a special Spoiler-cast, as the final half-hour of the show is fully dedicated to discussing The Last of Us and its many twists and turns. If you haven't finished the game yet, bookmark it for the future. If you have, enjoy the discussion!

  • The Last of Us SPOILERS!!!

Just an hour and a half ago I was infuriated by Garnett and the crew and their outlook on the game's story and Joel personality.

But then I kinda saw a bit of merit in some of the discussion. And while I still disagree - I have to note that this whole argument was masterfully engineered by Naughty Dog's writers, actors and directors. With all those bits and pieces - the comics which reflect the current state of the story, the multiple vague comments in the documents you find, the words that are said and the emotions that are shown - we're given a much bigger and a much more complex picture. There just isn't any right or wrong on it, only in the eye of the beholder. It is a fucked up world, that we hopefully will never experience except in fiction. But people in it just can't be judged from this "rationality vs emotions" perspective.

I'm sorry that Garnett hated Joel so much, which is why it was so tough to play this game for him. Just thinking of how dark the story gets if we assume that Joel is a lunatic serial killer who only gets happy in the end after killing all that stood before him and Ellie.

I just didn't see it that way - it is definitely not a redemption story. But still Joel becomes a better person after "killing" the hope for humanity by "saving" Ellie. He stops running from his past and finally accepts it all. And even if he is not honest with Ellie in the end, she accepts it because she trusts him, not because she's afraid of him.

No black and white here. Only peoples lives.
