Today at its Build conference, Microsoft detailed the new DirectX 11.2 for Windows 8.1. The various visual enhancements will be available to developers, and will be available for both PC and Xbox One games.

You can check out the update notes for the technical details. In particular, the toolset includes streamlined shading functions, GPU overlay support to open up system resources, tiled resources for greater texture fidelity when zoomed in close to an object, lower latency, buffer scaling, and more.

Microsoft also published a lengthy Windows 8.1 preview (PDF), which includes an overview of the new DirectX features, along with the other additions coming to Windows 8.1.

VentureBeat reports that VP of Windows Antoine Leblond showed a few practical examples of tiled resources at its conference. A map of Mars was blurry when zoomed in, but then became clear when tiled resources was turned on. A second demo showed the individual rivets and bits of dirt on a glider when zoomed in close.

So.... for Windows 8.1 only? Not for Window 7? If so, totally useless for devs.

I'm hoping it's just previewed with 8.1 and will be released to 7/8 later

8.1 is a free upgrade for 8, so Windows 7 (or Vista lol) would be the only concern

It's a marketing point to attempt to strongarm consumers into upgrading, but it has no muscle behind it. It's the same exact strategy as DirectX 10 only being available in Windows Vista, but it's not like 5 years ago where the new shaders were considered interesting. PC game developers who are making non-RT games won't want to block off potential consumers who are still on Windows 7, and refuse to upgrade to Windows 8. Besides, they have an alternate choice: use OpenGL, which opens the door to Mac or Linux platforms, as well as partial code library interoperability to Android and iOS.

It'll work out just as well as restricting DX10 to Vista did.

Pretty much most games still use Dx9.

That's probably because the 360 runs some flavor of DX 9. I'd expect that to change after the new consoles launch.

It would be funny if devs started doing stuff with OpenGL to get at those features anyway in older OS's.

Devs will target the lowest common denominator, don't worry about it. Windows 7 installs will be huge for a long long long time coming.

I think the best part of this is that it includes Xbox One. I assume that means it'll be easier to port games from Xbox One to PC.

Well you're on a gaming website where most of us use desktops... not faggy little tablets to play games. Windows 8 sucks for everyday use without a touchscreen.
