Activision producing fewer licensed games
by Steve Watts, Feb 20, 2013 7:30am PSTActivision has stated it will be producing fewer licensed games this year, amid a statement regarding layoffs. The company laid off 30 full-time employees in all, constituting "one half of one percent" of the company workforce, according to a statement.
"Like any successful business, Activision Publishing consistently works to align its costs with its revenues—this is an ongoing process," Activision wrote in a statement to Kotaku. "In 2013, we expect to release fewer games based on license properties and as a result are realigning our structure to better reflect the market opportunities and our slate. Approximately, 30 full-time employees have been impacted globally, which represents approximately one half of one percent of Activision Blizzard's employee population. We are offering those employees who are impacted outplacement counseling services."
The company did not specify which licenses are taking a hiatus. It is still planning Walking Dead, Deadpool, and a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game this year. Other frequent licensed properties include Transformers, Spider-Man, Cabela, and James Bond. To result in a net fewer number of licensed games this year, at least a couple of those won't be getting new titles.
