Rumor: Sony considering biometrics, touch screen for Orbis (PS4) controller

Yet another Orbis rumor has surfaced, suggesting that the next PlayStation console will include biometric sensors and/or a touch screen. CVG claims a "senior games studio source working on an upcoming Sony game" says Sony has been experimenting with a number of controller designs. According to the report, the long-standard DualShock controller will not be a "primary controller" for the upcoming console, but "it is likely that the range of PS3 controllers will be compatible with the next-gen system." While CVG initially posted the rumor, Eurogamer claims that a separate source has confirmed its validity. Adding more weight to the rumor is Sony's 2011 patent for biometric controllers. One implementation of the controller (seen above) largely resembles a DualShock, but includes sensors built-in to read skin moisture, heart rhythm, and muscle movement. Another concept (seen below) looks more like a Wii U GamePad, with its large touch screen. It's clear that Sony is experimenting with a number of possibilities for their next-gen console. However, the company has yet to officially confirm their next-gen ambitions.

      i hope not.. i love the ps3 controller.. i dont want everything to go the wiiU or smartphone way.. keep it simple.. and i bet its gonna cost more than the controllers we have now( which i think is too expensive already)

        I've said since the reveal of the WiiU gamepad. If either of the other 2 didn't have a similar controller at launch they'd have a irrelevant console 1 year after launch.

          Uh no. I would rather them put the cost into the actual CPU and GPU hardware. I don't need gimmicks.

            Lol it's not a gimmick it's a matter of convenience. It doesn't take away anything from the gaming side, maybe some of the processing power, but it taps the aging gamers with families market, and aging Established gamers have more disposable income the under 20-25 gamer.

            Besides that Being stuck to the TV in Japan not going to sell.

        Because Nintendo keeps kicking their asses.

        Seriously, the Wii sold more units than the PS3 and 360 combined. The DS outsold the PSP 2:1.

        Sony and Microsoft think they're giving the consumers what they want and then Nintendo comes along and shows that they want something else so Sony and Microsoft scramble.

        Sony half-asses it with their lollipop controller and Microsoft actually innovates with Kinect.

        Although to be fair I do think some of these console makers have had these ideas for a long time now and they're just not confident enough to try things until Nintendo sticks their neck out. When it fails, like Virtual Boy, they don't move forward. When it succeeds, like the Wii, they do.

          oh really? Why do I think you have no idea of the real current numbers or projected numbers? Wiis sold a ton between 2006-2009 and haven't sold squat for the last 3 years, that's accelerating as both the PS3 and 360 have steadily caught up.

          Nintendo can't currently sell anything non handheld. The Wii U has underperformed against both the wii _and_ the gamecube

            OK, it does appear my information is out of date, so you're correct there.

            However, a couple of factors in my favor:

            a) The question was "Why does Sony keep copying Nintendo?" and the two big ways this was true were PlayStation Move and this new controller. When they did PlayStation Move, the Wii had sold more units than the PS3 and 360 combined. Same for Kinect. And by your own link, the Wii has still sold more units than the PS3. So I maintain the part of my statement that says Sony is getting their ass kicked by Nintendo.

            b) It depends on your definition of "win". For example, who "won" between SNES and Genesis? A lot of people would say Genesis, but by the end of that cycle, SNES had sold more units (like 55% SNES and 45% Genesis), so by sheer numbers alone SNES won. But since Nintendo had gone from 90% market share with the NES to 55% with the SNES, and was outsold by the Genesis until Donkey Kong Country came out, most people would call Genesis the winner because they dominated for so long and still had nearly half of the market at the end of the day. The Wii outsold both of the other superior-in-power consoles for so long they both scrambled to copy the main gimmick for years. And dozens of things Nintendo pioneered, like force feedback and analog sticks, were copied by Sony in the last generations. I still have to hand this round to Nintendo

      If they expect developers to be dynamic based off of the player's bio-metrics.... think again. This is so gimmicky and like txfeinberg mentioned... I'd rather see the cost go into the machine's processors, rather than some gimmick that some fraction of developers out there would actually utilize.

      "hmm, according to the bio-metrics, I think the player may be having a seizure, lets turn down some of the blinking lights" lol... no.
