Weekend Confirmed 134 - Dishonored, XCOM, Star Citizen
by Garnett Lee, Oct 12, 2012 11:00am PDTDishonored, XCOM Enemy Unknown, and some Retro City Rampage make up the veritable fruit salad of videogames devoured on this delicious Weekend Confirmed. Shacknews managing editor John Keefer joins Jeff and Garnett for the feast. They take their time enjoying it all, getting into the highlights from a trio of games that brought them plenty of delight while being careful to talk in terms that avoid spoiling anything. Of course Borderlands 2 still manages a cameo with the debut of the Mechromancer this week and its first DLC coming next week. And naturally the conversations include plenty of twists and turns, but we wouldn't want to spoil that either. All that, Finishing Moves, and the football tailgate make this one tasty episode.

At least in MSG,you can control your encounters, while in games like Dead Space, just to name one,it's pretty much just a monster closet fetch quest where you are GUARANTEED to run into a monster or two(or three) at any given predetermined time, keeping you constantly nervous and stressed out.
Seems like there's a bit of cognitive dissonance here.

While I'm totally loving this game,I find that the positive comments about the AI is a bit over played.Metal Gear's enemy AI is much more intuitive and engaging than Dishonored's.Every enemies field of view in Dishonored(or the enemies that I've encountered so far) have absolutely no field of view above or below them. You can literally be standing on a ledge above someone,in broad daylight, and they won't have any inclination to look up at all.And if they are down the street, they dont see a shady looking figure creeping on a ledge, again in broad day light.
Another thing that I wish that they did (hopefully it's available on a harder difficulty) is that when you knock someone out, whether it be from sleep darts or a choke out, they are essentially dead, and won't ever wake up,and when they are discovered, their allies don't really try to wake them up either.Again, this is another thing that makes MGS the standard bearer of ALL stealth games by adding that little extra sense of danger to even incapacitated enemies that they will be back on their feet if you don't cover your tracks.
My final observation that annoys me just a little is that you can't see the reflection of your character in anything. For some reason, when I was sneaking around in one of the buildings and looked at something reflective and didn't see myself,I felt that took me out of the game just a tiny little bit.I know that it's kind of minor, but with all of the other attention to detail in this game, how could they miss this?I really wanted to see myself with that mask on.
I know that it sounds like I'm really ragging on the game, but I think that it's been really fun thus far,and is a serious contender for my personal GOTY.
