'Skylanders Giants' domains registered

It looks like another dose of toy-driven gaming could be in the works. On January 19, six new domains were registered--both in the U.S. and internationally--that contained some reference to "Skylanders Giants" therein. Could it be a sequel to Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure?

For the uninitiated, Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure is the multi-platform action-adventure game in which players purchase physical versions of the game's characters, which can then be used in-game. The recent registrations of skylandersgiants.com and other like domain names were discovered by domain monitoring site Fusible.

The site also quite reasonably posits that Activision is behind the registrations, not only because the franchise originates with the publisher, but because the domains were registered under the name MarkMonitor, the name of an internet brand protection company that Activision has used in the past. In fact, it's the same name under which the domains for the original Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure were registered.

News site GiantBomb has also notes that New York's Toy Fair kicks off on February 12. The event has previously highlighted Skylanders, though given the fact that some of the toys announced for Spyro's Adventure still haven't been released, it might be a little early to expect any announcements relating to "Skylander's Giants" at next month's event.

Though Activision hasn't provided specific sales figures for Skylanders, it's consistently mentioned as being one of the publisher's top performers, alongside Call of Duty. "Activision had a pretty aggressive plan, and the toys have far outstripped it," Toys for Bob studio president Paul Reiche told Gamasutra back in November. "The game itself is selling better and better each week," he said, adding, "We've also stepped outside and there are some people who don't even own consoles that are buying the toys."
