Based on its title, you can probably tell that Choplifter HD is an HD remake of something. Not everyone will remember the original Choplifter's release in 1982--but that hasn't stopped developer InXile Entertainment from making an Unreal Engine-based revamp of the game.

Choplifter HD will be available on PC, PlayStation Network, and Xbox Live Arcade next week: January 10 on PC/PS3, and January 11 on Xbox 360. All three versions will be $14.99, or 1200 Microsoft Points.

The full game promises to offer 30 missions "ranging from straight prisoner extraction to dropping off saboteurs." Oddly, there will be a number of cameos from other games hidden in the adventure, including Duke Nukem and Super Meat Boy.

Jeff called the game a "fun reboot of a classic game that should appeal to newcomers, as much as it does fans of the original" in his preview.

Looks fun... but I'll probably still wait for a price drop.

Don't forget the gameboy version. Never could beat it, but it was fun. Will look into this one for sure.

Choplifter actually was a fun game about 20 years ago. It really does not warrant the shiny graphics and 3d shooting. I pass despite fond memories of liking the original.

Oh man, Choplifter on the Apple 2e was my introduction to 6502 assembly. There was a nasty crash bug that occasionally popped up, so the only way to keep playing was to ctrl-closed apple-reset and dig around in the asm code to replace a single goto with a return. Fun times!

That really does look like Choplifter! And you can still land on the evacuees! Only 4 environments sounds sort of weak, but I guess it's better than the ONE of the original.
Now they need to do Raid On Bungeling Bay. I always liked Drol, too.

      I might spend 9.99 but can't justify 14.99
