Morning Discussion
by Alice O'Connor, Jan 05, 2011 5:00am PSTI'm still catching up on my RSS feeds from November and December. I haven't the foggiest what I was doing then but it apparently resulted on me getting very behind on reading things I very much enjoy. Hey! Let's go on a magical mystery tour together!
Amnesia: The Dark Descent developer Frictional Games wrote a splendid lengthy piece on 'How the player becomes the protagonist' in its spook-o-rama.
'Costumes: the Wearable Dialog' is a bit of an illustrated crash course in costume design. While its focus is on comics, the principles absolutely apply to video games too.
Inspired by the book Destroy All Movies: The Complete Guide To Punks On Film, Everything Is Terrible! produced a seventeen-minute, four-part compilation of 'punks' in movies--parts one, two, three and four. Movie punks are such strange and wonderful creatures, absurd caricatures of caricatures, that I find them delightful. As you well know, movie punks are not workplace-friendly so do not invite them to yours.
Do your part for society and make dolls--action figures, if you will--poseable so they can ride dinosaurs and do other things unbecoming of girls, lasses, women or ladies.
That's enough links for today. Do you like links? Of course you do. Did you already see these on Digg or Reddit or Clickit or Punchit or Rockit or Sockit? Good for you, sunshine.

I have never owned one but an acquaintance is selling his 360 pro (I think...something like 20gb or whatever) for $75-$85 bones. Thing is, the optical drives makes a funny noise, like it's vibrating around in there too much. So much so that he bought a newer unit because he was afraid that one might go out.
Now, as some of you know, I am a heavy PC supporter so I've never bothered with the latest consoles but I smell a really good deal here, he said it works fine and I would probably end up taking it apart to see what is causing the noise in the optical drive. What do you guys think? Should I buy it?

Is there any service or way of getting "credit" for a physical books you already own? Like, say, if you already own a physical copy of a book, be able to scan in the barcode to download the book to the eReader of your choice, or possibly a way to send in the book to a company to get credit and they email you a code to download the digital copy to your eReader?
This is my main beef right now on why I haven't purchased one. If I could get credit for all the books I own and have them downloaded to an eReader, that would be awesome. I would totally be on board with turning in a book, to get credit for the digital version at a discount if the books were donated to a library as well.

It seems pretty shitty to kick them out for putting a harmless picture on facebook. What ever happened to getting a reprimand or something of that ilk? I really don't see what the big deal is. There wasn't a sign that said "Sally Smith's used placenta!"

Sometimes I love Newegg, then 2 seconds later I hate their greedy fucking guts. I was just shopping for a few items for work: a pair of flash drives, a hard drive enclosure, and an external USB hard drive. I look at the cart and the calculate shipping thing comes out to be $4.84. I remove the external USB hard drive, shipping charges go UP to $7.14. What the motherfuck?!?!?!??!
Due to weight restrictions, your shipping method and price have been adjusted.
Yes, charge me more for shipping since you are now shipping me LESS items with LESS weight. Fucking assholes.

How much usable space is there in the 32GB model?
How large on average are iPhone apps?
Does anyone use the iPod Touch as a primary mobile gaming platform?
I'm considering buying an iPod Touch to replace my current iPod, and to provide me with a nice portable gaming platform for long subway rides. I currently have a Blackberry paid for by my employer, so there's no need for an iPhone at the moment, but I'm itching to have the gaming platform.
For example, my current 80GB iPod has about 74GB of usable space. With the OS and built-in apps and such of the iPhone/iPod Touch I would imagine that a 32GB model would have considerably less free space than that, but I'm hoping someone with one of these can tell me exactly.
I have 34GB of audio on my current iPod, but not all of that is essential. I guess the bigger question is whether to spend the money for a 64GB model or if the 32GB model might work for me.

As I'm getting into photography I want to share my shots with family and friends. There are two security groups already setup on picasa as Family, Friends. As a test user I added an alternate email address into the family area.
There are 3 settings of privacy: Public, Anyone with the Link, Private.
I'm assuming that if I select Private, select 'share' with family, then my alternate email address would have to sign in to google, goto my picasaweb home page and then be able to see the red locked album however that doesn't appear to be the case.
Is the family, friends clickable boxes just for 'sharing' and sending them a daily digest? Is there somewhere else I have to add a user to be able to see it? I'd like for people to be able to login to google and see tons of albums rather than just linking to individual ones.

I decided to go with the Evo over the galaxy S. love the big screen, dont need a physical keyboard, and I think the mod community is a bit better for the evo.
sprints coverage map shows a dead spot over my office (coverage is about a mile away), but i turned it on this morning anyways. I'm able to get it outside but not inside my office. Ran a speed test, pulled over 6mb down and 2mb up o_O. its no LTE speed, but thats just crazy to me for a mobile network.
