Morning Discussion
by Alice O'Connor, Jan 05, 2011 5:00am PSTI'm still catching up on my RSS feeds from November and December. I haven't the foggiest what I was doing then but it apparently resulted on me getting very behind on reading things I very much enjoy. Hey! Let's go on a magical mystery tour together!
Amnesia: The Dark Descent developer Frictional Games wrote a splendid lengthy piece on 'How the player becomes the protagonist' in its spook-o-rama.
'Costumes: the Wearable Dialog' is a bit of an illustrated crash course in costume design. While its focus is on comics, the principles absolutely apply to video games too.
Inspired by the book Destroy All Movies: The Complete Guide To Punks On Film, Everything Is Terrible! produced a seventeen-minute, four-part compilation of 'punks' in movies--parts one, two, three and four. Movie punks are such strange and wonderful creatures, absurd caricatures of caricatures, that I find them delightful. As you well know, movie punks are not workplace-friendly so do not invite them to yours.
Do your part for society and make dolls--action figures, if you will--poseable so they can ride dinosaurs and do other things unbecoming of girls, lasses, women or ladies.
That's enough links for today. Do you like links? Of course you do. Did you already see these on Digg or Reddit or Clickit or Punchit or Rockit or Sockit? Good for you, sunshine.

I'm going to use this opportunity to throw out there that I just finished playing C&C 4 (which thank god I only spent 5 bucks on in the recent Steam sale) and it is quite possible the most disappointing game I have EVER played. I've played every single C&C game to date (excepting the FPS one they released way back) so you might call me a fan of the franchise. I'm really very confused as to how it's possible that EA fucked that one up as badly as they did. All they had to do to make an even halfway decent game was to copy the game play from C&C 3, throw in some new units, and give us a satisfying conclusion to Kane's story arc. If they wanted to actually make a better product than that, by building on what had already been done in previous games, that would have been cool too. Instead, we get what I can only imagine is a purposely constructed FUCK YOU to the fans of the franchise. If it wasn't for the presence of Kane in the cut scenes, I wouldn't even have realized I was playing a Command and Conquer game!!
Where was the base building and resource collection? Where were the large scale battles and the fight for control over territory? WHERE THE FUCK WAS THE TIBERIUM?
I could even have at least forgiven (partially) the shit-tastic game play and the complete departure from the series core game play elements if they had at least had an awesome story and a good send off for Kane. Instead we get a few cut scenes that have zero plot in them with Kane constantly talking about your implant and how important it is, and then we get to see him walk through a portal and....that's it. What the fucking hell EA!?!?!?
Fuck, I don't think I've ever been this angry over the shittiness of a videogame before. They took one of the best villains in video game history and gave him a third rate send off. God damnit. >:(
C&C 4, worst game of 2010 hands down.
