'Hellboy' Director Guillermo del Toro Making "Lovecraftian" Horror Game With THQ

Guillermo del Toro, the director of horror-y movies including 'Pan's Labyrinth' and 'Hellboy,' has told MTV Multiplayer that he's working with THQ on games including a "Lovecraftian" horror, though THQ will not yet confirm this.

"It's horror... but it's a very different type of horror game," del Toro revealed. "It's not survival horror. It's truly a strange, geeky mix. It's a Lovecraftian thing. Let's leave it at that."

"We're working together," said the director. "Hopefully everything will come together in the next few days and we can formally announce it and so forth. But we are talking about huge games, huge world creation and long deadlines."

"Expect the first game, best case scenario, 2013," he explains, saying "With THQ we're looking at around a three year developing deadline for each game."

However, THQ is not yet backing his story up and has issued a lukewarm response.

At THQ, we are focused on the highest level of creative development by putting artists first. Guillermo del Toro is one of many creative artists that we respect and would be interested in working with. However, at this time, we do not have any formal announcement to make.

The director said that he could not reveal any more on the game until it was officially announced by THQ, an announcement which MTV says is expected "any day now."

This project is apparently unrelated to del Toro's apocalyptic game idea 'Sundown,' which was once in the works at BloodRayne developer Terminal Reality but hasn't been heard from in years and is presumed cancelled. He touches on Sundown in the interview, saying it "was eerily similar to 'Left 4 Dead,' which I adore and am addicted to, and in our household is considered a family game."

H.P. Lovecraft, best known for his monstrous creation Cthulthu, has been cited as an influence on the director. Guillermo Toro is also set to direct a movie adaptation of Lovecraft's tale 'At the Mountains of Madness,' with James Cameron producing.
