The reason it's so scary for me is that you can't fight and kill any of the enemies. In all the games I listed yea it's creepy when you encounter an enemy but at least you can kill them. In Amnesia your never safe and the pacing is done quite well too. It feels like the beginning of System Shock 2 for the whole game so far. Once you get some weapons in System Shock 2 it wasn't so bad for me.

Repost: A slapdash Amnesia quick save method
If you're having trouble at a certain part, or if you want to save lantern oil while you're looking around, you can use the following as a pseudo quick save:
1. Pause the game and choose Save and Exit.
2. At the main menu, choose Continue.
3. When you've figured out what you need to do, or if you just want to create a save point at a safe area because you're too damn scared to keep going, choose Exit, then Continue. This quits the game WITHOUT saving, as the game warns you.
When next you choose Continue, you'll resume at the point at which you selected Save and Exit. Very convenient if you've wasted most of your lantern oil trying to figure out how to escape a room, solve a puzzle, etc. -
