Morning Discussion

Over the weekend Valve revealed new DLC was incoming for both the original Left 4 Dead and its sequel. Originally the three-map chapter known as "The Sacrifice" was only planned for the original title but Valve decided to bring it to owners of Left 4 Dead 2. The reasoning was so those who no longer own the original title, or decided against buying it (for some reason), wouldn't have to purchase a whole game to see the content.

Along with news of new content, Valve is bringing the original "No Mercy" campaign to Left 4 Dead 2.

It got me thinking (What with new DLC for the original game): What title in this generation that no longer has any DLC support -- or never did -- would you like to see get new content added to it? My obvious choice would be Mirror's Edge. I wasn't a fan of the game overall but I thought the free running was very well done. More of that, sans fighting enemies, would be welcome.

    SPACE SIM MENZ

I desperately need an awesome game to get the old joystick de-dusted. I bought X3 because people rave about it, but no matter how many times I try I just can't get into it. Need a more accessible mission system, more transparent trading... generally just more of a "pick up and play" experience. I also have Freelancer already, which I like a lot except for the controls. I'd like something with the accessibility of FL and the spaceflight/scale of X3, if such a thing exists.

Okay, realized I should give a more comprehensive rollout of things I've tried:

Independence War series - loved the first, second was too... I donno. predictable? Target cargo carrier, fire till it releases its stuff, repeat. Meh.

Evochron - Seemed kind of fun, planetary entry was a neat idea but lame when there's just a square shaped city and no topography. Infuriating interface (oops, I clicked my cargo to see if I could get details and it jettisoned.)

Spaceforce: Rogue Universe - Never got past first fight. Blast the pirates with lasers for five minutes, maybe get his shield down. Meanwhile his buddies are shooting missiles.

Freespace - Best space sim ever made, though I'm looking for something more sandboxy.

It really doesn't satisfy some of the core requirements, but you should play it anyways.

If you liked X3, - why not try X-Tension or X2 even, - they're the same format, but much simpler. I still have a blast with X-Tension. Things are generally cleaner but still fun. Yes they're old as hell now, but still updated, - you will find patches on the official site in a few weeks that adds updated executables to allow the games to run on Win7 etc, with a greater range of screen resolutions.

Given the games were released over a decade ago in the case of X-BTF, I'd say that's what I call support.

I find it's actually easier to manage stations in the older games, you don't have to worry about connecting them all, or figuring out how to work our profit margins for complexes. It's just simpler in terms of learning curves and brain power. Admittedly it's still high, but it's also still great fun.

If you can find Privateer 2, and make it work in a DosBox.... (then tell me how you got it to work - also, while you're at it, do the same with Jane's ATF and Longbow)

There was a recent game called Darkstart One (I think) that got good enough reviews that it might be enough to tide you over.

There's an XBLA game that was recently released for 80 points. I tried it last night and liked it well enough to buy it. ... Then I got sucked back into Fable 2.

I would also use "Fable 2" and "sucked" in the same sentence, but not quite in the same way you did.

You mean XBLIG? I don't think XBLA games go as low as 80 points, only the Indie games do.
