You can use Twitter passively. A lot of people use it like a newswire: they set up an account, follow businesses, personalities or media local to their town/city/region and leave it at that. It takes no effort at all besides this initial set up. Used like this, it's almost like a bite-sized Google Reader updated with much greater frequency.

"It's kind of like sitting at this giant cyber-sports bar and only sitting next to people you find interesting," he says. "Twitter has pretty much become the morning newspaper. It's the first site I visit every day." -

"Another clear act of Facebook not truly deleting data that you've removed from your profile. I cleared all my 'likes' out when they insisted we become part of a page for them. Yet now my 'recommended pages' include absoloutely everything which I previously had, all the music, all the TV shows, even the exact activities."

your face is horrible! I hated the idea of twitter at first, but I realized its the best way to be notified when my favorite cavs writer posts an article or has inside information.
shaq used to give out free tickets on twitter so I follow him. plus hes moderately funny.
bill simmons is the best for NBA news
I dont know why I follow bowling any more, he rarely posts stuff and since MW2 is done being updated theres not much point in keeping him around
