Red Dead Redemption Sells Over 5 Million

Rockstar's open-world western Red Dead Redemption has "sold in" over five million copies worldwide since its PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 release on May 18, publisher and studio owner Take-Two Interactive revealed today in its financial results.

Exactly what the company meant by "sold-in" was not disclosed, though clarification may be on the way as it is holding a conference call to discuss the results shortly.

[UPDATE] As several readers have pointed out, "sold-in" refers to the number of copies that Take-Two has sold to retailers, not consumers. [/UPDATE]

In related news, Grand Theft Auto IV has now sold over 17 million units worldwide.

This game has permanently raised the bar for what I expect in an open-world/sandbox game. The level of immersion and atmosphere is stunning. The wildlife animations, the weather system, day/night cycle and lighting are so incredibly realistic it is easy to forget you are playing a videogame sometimes.

I am still playing the ever loving shit out of this game daily. It's so awesome. I know this is a stretch but I honestly believe this is the best MP game on all existing consoles.

This game is like 2 games in one. The single player game has succeeded in creating the only virtual world that I cannot wait to jump back into when I get home everyday. It's that good. I never thought I'd get distracted by collecting plants, hunting animals and searching for treasure like I do in RDR.

The multiplayer, between free-roam, gang shoot-outs and unlocking new characters (and weapons) is a game unto itself - in the same addictive environment AND it is tremendous fun to boot!

A masterpiece.

Sold in would mean how many it managed to convinve retailers or online vendors to buy, not necessarily how many customers bought a copy. What actually sold is probably significantly lower maybe around 3 million
