Morning Discussion
by Alice O'Connor, May 21, 2010 5:00am PDTGood morning, class. Your task today is to study the history of PC sound devices as told by The Secret of Monkey Island. Complete your work to a satisfactory standard and I won't tell Dr. Breckon what an awful bunch of slackers you've been during his sabbatical.

I whish there were more systems like this in more specific technical discussion groups.
I fucking hate forums. scroll down half the page just to read 3 words like "that's not good" or "do it". the shack has spoiled me
Are people dumb/blind? which other sites have at least usable commenting systems? for reading 200+ replies? I can't think of anyone else. And google wave doesn't count because it's too slow.
Thread Truncated. Click to see all 52 replies.
What about a perpetual chatty that never gets refreshed, ever. Instead, stale threads get archived.
So say a thread gets no new replies for 24 hours. It gets pulled out of the chatty and sent to the archive. And the stakes get higher the older a thread gets. Or a 3 day old megathread for RDR needs to have a post in it every hour otherwise it gets sent to the archive, too.
The goal of this is to keep the discussion flowing while pulling out all the old crap and noise, and preventing people from resurrecting ancient threads. Once they're archived, they are searchable but you can't post in them (unless you're a super-user maybe). And you won't get all those awkward stoppages when there's a new chatty and everyone gets their discussion interrupted.
Also a groups feature would be nice. Sort of how reddit lets you split the main stream into tech / pics / funny / politics would be cool. I wonder if a little AI could handle that.
What about private groups? Imagine a private chatty where you could chat about stuff with a select group of people (colleagues, friends, etc..).
The shacknews comments is the best way to discuss anything on the planet. It's a real shame the rest of the internet is suck in the linear world still.
