StarCraft 2 Digital Download Coming to Battle.net

Blizzard's anticipated strategy sequel StarCraft II will be available as a digital download through the redesigned Battle.net platform upon its release later this year, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick confirmed today during an investors conference call.

The digital release will come in addition to the boxed retail edition slated to hit stores.

Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime affirmed later in the call that StarCraft II is planned for release in mid-2010, adding "we are slated to begin closed beta testing this month."

If there isn't a pre-load option, those servers are going to be swamped come release day. I was sitting on my comp at 2am downloading the decryption key for HL2, and it took hours. It might just be smarter and less frustrating to get a boxed copy. Comes with a sweet ass manual too, I bet.

I'm more concerned with how quickly they will invite new users. What good is beta this month is they don't invite non-key/fansite uesrs until May

They should offer a small discount for a digital download instead of retail; they're saving money, and besides, if it's the same price who's not going to want the retail box and manual? Now for $5 cheaper and not having to go to the store ...

Chris are you tuned in to the conference call?
I think being a D/Download was always going to happen after the Battle.net revamp and our old games now being downloadable.
