REPOST! A couple awesome S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl mods have recently entered release candidate:
First is Zone Reclamation Project: http://metacognix.com/stlkrsoc/index.html
ZRP is basically a fan-made patch that fixes all kinds of bugs in the game. It tries to keep the "vanilla" SoC experience, although it does come with some optional mods that really add to the game without changing it too much (Repair mod, Quest overhaul, Freeplay, etc). It comes with a nifty modifier program that lets you tweak the game to your heart's content including turning the optional mods on and off. I can't recommend this mod enough, especially if it's your first playthrough.
Second is L.U.R.K: http://www.moddb.com/mods/lurk/
LURK is a really exciting new mod. It does what some thought was impossible; makes stealth work properly. You can actually sneak around without enemies magically seeing you, and using your knife wont automatically alert everyone within a mile radius. It also overhauls the graphics and many other aspects of the game. I've only played a little bit but it really seems to increase immersion. The author of this mod also worked on "STALKER Complete 2009," which a lot of you seemed to like.
Give them a try!-

I played it for a few hours last night and came away extremely impressed. The weather cycles are incredible, with impressive looking thunderstorms and beautiful starscapes at night. It adds a bunch of new weapons that are fun to use, and most guns seem more deadly and satisfying to shoot. Stealth actually works, so you can sneak around at night with a silencer and kill without instantly being found out. The nights are very dark too, so nightvision is much more useful, but it has a sleeping bag mod so you can sleep if you want to actually see things. It's by far the best looking STALKER I've played, modders have really done some wonders with this game.

Clear Sky's got similar problems; the AI is still pretty dumb, although it got better with things like cover and pathing.
But the scripting for quests is just plain sloppy. One quest in particular can be completely bypassed by simply going South on a map instead of going through the nearby Northern exit. You go South, and lo and behold, you're somehow magically at the next step in the plot. -
