Gran Turismo 5 vs. Forza 3: Ferrari 458 Face-Off
by Alice O'Connor, Sep 23, 2009 3:10pm PDTGran Turismo 5 and Forza Motorsport 3 are both celebrating the new Ferrari 458 Italia with trailers, offering an interesting comparison between the upcoming racers.
Turn 10's Xbox 360 exclusive Forza 3 goes first as it arrives first, on October 27 with a demo hitting this Thursday. The 458 will be released for download this holiday season.
Polyphony Digital's 458 Italia from Gran Turismo 5 is next off the line, though the date of its PlayStation 3-exclusive release remains a mystery--Polyphony founder Kazunori Yamauchi said "That might be 2009, or it might be 2010" back in 2008.

Interesting that Polyphony Digital's video was a passionate an homage to the car, while Turn 10's appeared to be merely trying to show off their own game...

Then I watched the other one for GT5, and uh; Yowzers. Both look really damn good, but the emblem on the PS3 version is more detailed, and the lighting seems... more sophisticated? It looks amazing. Although the lack of burnt rubber on the PS3 video was suspicious.
To be honest, both look so good! Everyone is a winner!

Protip: When a console game shows zero aliasing in the trailer, there's something going on that's not in-game gameplay.

Its gona boil down to three things in my opinion:
- road detail, normal mapped high rez textures
- road side details, no flat cardboard, nice trees leaves, etc
- damage models
- car handdling and gameplay.
To me everyone has mastered the car models we all know they are pimp, I am only concerned about the top three points that have lacked, point 4 has been fine for the most part.
Racer have come a long way, finally I may see real detailed roads and environments for the rest has be perfected. I guess damage models would be nice, but this is not new so it should be a standard.
Example FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage has some amazing damage models and physix and that game is $9 for the PC as well cheap for the 360 and was released last year. It sort of funny how GT5 is barging about damage models its not new at all allot of games have years ago.

Both models look pretty amazing, but GT5 has the right lighting (assuming it wasn't pre-rendered). It looks like they went out of their way to simulate HDR lighting, which makes a huge difference. They also made liberal use of DoF, which always adds another visual dimension. There may be a lot of post work done to it (GT5 trailer), but that's hardly out of the rules. When it comes down to it, any "tricks" they can pull off to make it look better is fair-game.
