Team17 Director: 'Gates Are Closing' for XBLA Devs
by Alice O'Connor, Jul 15, 2009 12:31pm PDTThe barrier to entry to Xbox Live Arcade for new developers is rising higher still, Martyn Brown--director of Worms developer Team 17--has told Games Industry.
While Brown believes download distribution has matured and gained acceptance, the odds are increasingly against developers who are not already involved with the platform.
"It's difficult for any third party, start-up, whatever, to get titles onto Live because there are only so many titles appearing," explained Brown. "It's very, very tricky - I know the amount of applications that get sent for Live Arcade is huge, and there's a finite door there."
"There are a few new IPs in there, but only a few." Brown believes "People will see brand extensions going on there, and all the rest of it, but it's very, very tricky."
"As somebody who's been involved with it for three or four years, I know the momentum needed... so unless it's people who are into it now... I think a lot of these gates are closing. The quality bars are rising, and people really have to put up or shut up."
"If you've got something that's really techy and quirky then you're best bet to get a listen is probably Sony," advises Brown, "whereas with Microsoft you're really going for the commercial mass market audience - which they're had a lot of success with."
Team17 Software currently has two games in its Worms series on Xbox Live Arcade, and is set to release classic shooter remake Alien Breed Evolution later this year.

Really though, almost every game in the community section is something I wouldn't waste the time with anyway. In my experience, there are very very few games in there that have any real substance, and most of those developers should be happy to even get their games on there for 200 MS points. How much are we willing to cater to people who create games without any real substance or originality? There's only a small handful of games that have any real merit in the community games.
We need to face the fact that games are a huge industry now, and you either have a good game on your hands or you don't. If you don't go back to the drawing board until you do. Until then, I'd rather not even see your game wasting space in the XBLA menu when I'm looking for quality games.

im interested to see what they have done with Alien Breed a great Amiga game i dotn understand what there complaining about unless theyre still haunted by the crap Larry game they made.
The Indie Games section was supposed the fix that. With less stringent criteria for releases, it was supposed to be a haven for the small niche developer. Instead MS buried it deep in the NXE and made the release critera so lax that its seen as a backwater that most developer steer clear of. It says a lot when apps that make the controller vibrate are some of the top sellers. Hell, MS itself promoted the app that showed a picture of a fireplace.
So now MS has created two tiers of downloadable games. One that has an entry tax so high that you might as well move to the retail/boxed sector (which is what happened with Raiden Fighter Aces) and the other so low that developers dont even want to be associated with it.

Also, new games released can sometimes be hard to spot (in the middle of everything else).
I hear PSN handles this part a bit better.
