Evening Reading
by Nick Breckon, Jun 26, 2009 4:48pm PDTI'm on a real late-90s PC gaming kick lately. Revisited Dungeon Keeper 2 last night, and what a great decision--though, as usual, it took some jiggering to get it working on Windows 7. After a little over an hour of graphical corruption issues and crashing, I noticed the discreet "3dfx" logo at the bottom of the menu screen. Where's a Voodoo 2 when you need one?
After disabling hardware acceleration/Glide, it's now running acceptably in Windows 2000 compat mode, and what a game. Even the basic tunneling/Imp mechanics are endless satisfying to me. I'll have to load up DOSBox and give the original a spin later tonight.
The reading material:
- NovaLogic packs a lot of Delta Force onto Steam
- ArmA 2 patch 1.02 re-released
- Dawn of War 2 battle report continues balance explanations
- Weekend deals include Might and Magic, Zeno Clash
- Trine available for preorder on Steam

A friend of mine at work is having PC trouble. Here is the problems he's run into:
Playing L4D: between 5 and 30 mins into the game it freezes, the audio loops. He can ctrl alt delete out and get back to windows but then the game won't relaunch until he restarts.
Playing Fallout 3: The graphics corrupt, the more he plays the worse they get, Textures messed up, kind of smear when he turns.
Starting Windows: Occasionally when booting windows it will just hard lock about 3-4 mins in. He has to power off manually.
Running XP, he's got the latest nvidia drivers and the games are up to date. I told him to give the computer a clean in case it's over heating but if it was over heating why would windows lock up 5 mins after being turned on? Any ideas on some easy steps to try to narrow it down?

How do people style their hair?
Several months ago my girlfriend said she liked me with long hair. Since i didn't have long hair and have rarely gone longer than 2 months without a cut i thought i might avoid the hairdressers for a while. 6 months in and my fring has reached my mouth. Yay.

How do I need to combine the ActionTec into this equation to get TiVo w/ cablecards to work? Do I need to? Can I just connect the coax from the ONT to the TiVo and have it work? I really wish this stuff were better explained somewhere, I want to understand how it works.

I want to like this game...I really do. But holy shit I haven't seen a game this buggy in years. WTF? I can't play for more than 10 minutes without a CTD. And this is on a clean fully updated machine with latest drivers, etc.

Some UK shops are announcing zero pre-orders for the new PSP. Not a dozen, not a few, zero.
It probably doesn't help that Sony said they're pricing high because they want to. I hope they didn't spend much money making, else they're fucked.

I'm looking for some 360 or PS3 games (maybe Wii) that will allow me to save either A) anywhere or B) somewhat frequently. I've been in a bit of a funk on the game front, being bored by pretty much everything since Fallout 3. I'm willing to accept that my next game might not be as awesome as Fallout, but it's gotta make it easy on me. A typical problem is that I try to get back into Lost Odyssey, for example, and I have to play through 40 minutes of bland before I get to save again. That doesn't serve me very well since I work a lot.
Any ideas? I'm open for pretty much any genre, but I've never been hugely fond of fighting games. I'd like something that allows me to save anywhere or has short levels, like Mario Galaxy.

I've had problems with my Linksys wmp54gr wireless network card in Vista, and when I installed windows7 RC, it didn't even find it.. Windows XP has NO problems at all (Windows vista has this 'hiccup' thing, probably not due to a driver but due to a background process that runs in vista and not in XP)
Anyone have a linksys wmp54gr and running Windows 7? I'd like to run 64bit if possible, but I have heard that there are only 32 bit drivers for this card.

For some reason, if you type is "harry potter" you get the vagina page, with a very graphic, yet pretty, picture of a vagina.

Does anyone have a Nikon D300-compatible wireless (or wired, hell) remote they're not planning on using over the 4th of July weekend? If so, I should like to rent it; my wife bought one and it just shipped from Hong Kong and there ain't no WAY it's getting here by next weekend, so we want to cover our bases.
I'll make it worth your while with tens, maybe FIFTEENS worth of monies.
plz?

AnandTech has posted an extremely awesome article about something I preach about on occasion, VSync and Triple Buffering. They break down why it's so much better than leaving vsync off, mouse lag caused by vsync being enabled without triple buffering, etc. Excellent read. I will probably repost this for Weekend Discussion along with a small guide to enabling triple buffering in D3D games.
