    The reason the iPod earbuds are so shit is because the amplifier used in the iPod is shit. I don't know if this is still true but, at least until the first video ipod, any attempt to crank up the bass (either classical stuff with lots of low octave shit or proper DnB rave music) would break up and sound awful. Apparently it was cos apple were skimpin on capacitors and didn't wanna spend like, a buck more.
    
    Why bother with decent phones when the sound coming out is so poor? Lots of pple use external headphone amps with their ipods for that reason. Even the amp in my N95 sounds better than my iPod! (which I no longer have - gifted to a friend who quit real life to bum around the world w/his girl)
