PS3, Xbox 360 Motion Controller Rumors Spread

by Nick Breckon, May 01, 2009 5:04pm PDT

Rumors of motion controller-related announcements for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are beginning to propagate once again in advance of E3.

Variety cites several sources in a report that claims Sony is preparing to announce a new motion controller for the PlayStation 3. The purported device uses a webcam and LEDs to achieve an accuracy of motion greater than that of the Wii.

Meanwhile, a tipster writing into Engadget says that Microsoft is readying a full-body motion sensing device. The rumor would see a high-tech sensor bar detecting a full range of movement without the use of an actual handheld controller.

As many motion controller rumors have certainly been proven false in the past, the Shack doctor recommends taking two grains of salt and calling us after the show.

  • I am going to say that this isn't bullshit and that we will see motion controls from both Sony and Microsoft at this E3. Neither company's leadership will be able to resist the Wii's runaway success/profits. Thus they will play the "me too/follow the leader" game. The allure of money aside, motion control really is the future and now that someone (i.e. Nintendo) really made it work the race is on to define and control what will be played up as the next big leap in user interfaces. I don't know how Microsoft could pull off a full body motion sensing device and make it affordable but I look forward to it. Besides, as a PC gamer, I despise the gimpsticks/gamepad anyway.

Question for the engineers on this board...how much computing power/resources would a console or PC have to dedicate to processing the input from a full body motion sensing device? Would that keep a core or three busy full time?
