Evening O'Reading
by Alice O'Connor, Apr 17, 2009 6:00pm PDTOh, is the week over already? Doesn't time fly when you're having fun! Now, I collapse into a slumber so deep only true love or screeching children outside could rouse me.

- Staggering Demigod piracy figures.
- Earth 2160 is finally fixed on Steam, huzzah!
- F.E.A.R. 2 patch with Toy Soliders maps arrives, trailers still awesome.
- Terror of Left 4 Dead Survival Pack conveyed by graphs.

Because it automatically distributes the data over your server pool (if you have more than one) it gives you a lot of room for easy growth. If you're hitting the memory limit on your DB or web server, just buy some low end hardware with lots of ram and setup memcached on there. Obviously there is always LAN network latency to be concerned about but you're working with an extra ten to twenty milliseconds and that probably won't matter.
I bet twitter could have easily avoided most of its scaling failures if the did fragment caching from the start (although I'm pretty sure that wasn't in rails back in the day).
