Sony Swipes at Nintendo DSi, Invokes 'for Kids' Burn

Following last week's launch of the Nintendo DSi, SCEA director of hardware marketing John Koller has taken the liberty of firing a few shots in Nintendo's direction in a statement to Engadget.

"If Nintendo is really committed to reaching a broader, more diverse audience of gamers beyond the "kids" market that they've always engaged, there isn't much new with the DSi to support that," said Koller.

"Significant gamer demographic groups are being ignored," continued Koller, "and there continues to be limited opportunities for games from external publishers to do well on the DSi. Compare that with the PSP platform, where we have many blockbuster franchises from our publishing partners launching this year, representing a wide variety of genres and targeting diverse demographics.

For those keeping score, Nintendo shipped its 100 millionth Nintendo DS unit early last month, while Sony reported that it had shipped 50 million PSP handhelds as of February.

  • Just read his whole statement...

[Quote] From our own first-party studios, we're launching unique versions of LittleBigPlanet and MotorStorm, and we're also planning a steady stream of downloadable games -- both new titles and PSone classics -- to add to the content that PSP owners can already purchase wirelessly through PlayStation Store. Hey, Sony. You've been saying that forever now. How about you, I don't know, fucking DO IT. I love my PSP and play it to death but your PlayStation Store is shit. It's embarrassing how few PSX games have made it into the Classics downloads. I don't even own a Wii but I look at their virtual console page occasionally and it's not mind-blowing but it's still ridiculously awesome compared to your downloadable PSX library.

I'm consistently torn between the fact that I really do love and enjoy my PSP and backwards compatible PS3, and wanting to throw them out the window from being so damn sick of hearing Sony whine and bitch instead of doing something constructive or innovative.

  • It's kind've funny some of you guys make targeting kids sound like a bad thing. Businesses generally have target audiences. Never thought of buying a DS? Chances are you are not the intended audience.

I can't believe that Sony guy is trying to tell Nintendo how to market. Nintendo is doubling their sales and raking in the money whilst allegedly ignoring the demographics according to Sony, a
company presently losing big money from their gaming dept.. It's kinda like an F student telling an A student how to study.

So what would make Sony happy? for Nintendo to properly address their demographics and take an ever larger market share away from Sony? It would seem Sony is either masochistic or extremely jealous.

Their ignoring demographics statement doesn't make much sense to me either though. I see older ppl 30-40+ play the DS/Wii all the time, I can't say the same for the PS3/PSP. Nintendo's demographics seem way wider and deeper than Sony's. Casual gamers grossly outnumber hardcore gamers and Nintendo's even getting old people who never played games in the past into it. That sounds like the jackpot to me.

All of you bashing Nintendo's marketing and or business strategy practices should go apply to Sony, your logic would seem to fit well there (in their mkt dept. anyways).

btw I own neither systems and don't plan on getting either. I just know that:
    1) profits are better than losses
    2) 100 million sales is better than 50 million sales, and hence the people have voted for the winner with their dollars for what matters most in business, the bottom line.

  • How pathetic. Honestly, even if this wasn't some pathetic desperate marketing attempt by Sony, who really gives a shit? Nintendo is printing money with the DS. So either Sony is admitting 1) Nintendo's product is superior and / or 2) Nintendo has found the bulk of the market and is profiting heavily from it. Either way it speaks volumes of Sony's own ineptitude. i.e., if this really came down to demographics and Sony was really targeting "diverse demographics" then none of this shit should matter and Sony shouldn't be getting their ass kicked in the market. Right?

Ugh.. how retarded do you have to be to fire a shot at your competitor, who by the way is easily kicking your ass 2:1 in sales, for them supposedly not having a more diverse audience? 'Very' is the answer.
