Punch-Out Wii Detailed

A Nintendo press release has revealed new details of Punch-Out!!, the upcoming Wii revival of the classic boxing series.

According to the information, Punch-Out is set to include a two-player versus mode, though no online multiplayer functionality was mentioned.

Reads the release: "As in the single player mode, you'll want to land punches at the right moment to build up Star Punch points that translate into almighty haymakers! Landing and dodging blows in Head-to-Head mode also builds up a Giga Mac gauge. Once full, your fighter is ready to inflict some serious damage."

Nintendo also notes that characters Von Kaiser, King Hippo, Don Flamenco and trainer Doc Louis all return.

Punch-Out!! arrives May 18 on Wii.

Although I'm disappointed that Nintendo won't support wifi on Punch Out, it might be a good thing. I think the lag for international playing would be a factor. Just playing Mariokart from people around the world, you see karts and shells skip from time to time. If you translate that to a boxing match over wifi, I could imagine the playability would decrease. Then again Mario kart supports 12 racers and the tracks can be a cluster fuck, while punch out would be 1 vs 1.

Do we know what control options will be available? I don't fancy swing the Wiimote and nunchuk around in a futile attempt to box. I'd love multiple control options a la Mario Kart Wii and SSB Brawl that allow for several different methods of control.

yay - rehash of a 20+ yr old game. It was fun when I was 6... not sure if I'm gonna get too into it now, especially having to swing the damn wiimote the whole game, and we won't be seeing Mike Tyson this time around :(

It's cool, I guess - might be good if I had kids so they can play it but Nintendo's gotta step up their game and quit re-re-re-re-re-re-re-releasing their only titles and get some new stuff coming along imo.

Hopefully this means that Super Punch Out will be released on the virtual console around this time as well. Its one of the few SNES games I feel like I'm missing.
